As you begin to plan this year’s adventures, we wanted to share some of those top spots that you’ll want to book well in advance. Due to how competitive smaller, bespoke, private experiences can be, we do expect availability in the most popular destinations to be challenging. Although it may seem early to be thinking about this now, the more time you allow, the more choices you’ll have.

Summer in the National Parks

Despite the travel challenges immediately following Covid in 2020, in the past few years national parks saw record visitor numbers. The Grand Canyon saw 4.7 million visitors, second only to Great Smoky Mountains National Park which saw 13.3 million visitors. Since it’s looking like that trend will continue in 2026, there are a few parks in particular that are essential to plan ahead for this year.

Summer is the most popular time to visit most National parks, so it’s key to book in advance. July and August in particular bring the best weather and it’s a fantastic time to take in one of the most spectacular landscapes in North America. The Grand Canyon, Zion, Yellowstone, The Great Smoky Mountains and Yosemite are all in the top five most popular American national parks to visit so if you’re hoping to visit these during peak season, planning ahead is crucial.

In an effort to manage the mass amount of visitors and preserve the pristine wilderness in these areas, many parks have implemented new reservation and timed-entry systems. Mountain Rainier, Glacier, Arches, Rocky Mountain, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Arches, and Acadia National Parks are some of the more popular spots that require reservations during peak season, with many more starting pilot programs this year.

National Park Road Trip Inspiration: Yellowstone and Grand Teton Road Trip

Fall in New England

It’s no secret that New England shines in autumn. Every September, visitors trek from all over the country to witness the fall foliage change from bright greens to golden-reds. But the charming trait of New England is its small-town feel and with such a small window (sometimes only two weeks) to drive the fall colored highways, room availability and timing are limited.

Reservations at some of our favorite boutique getaways and luxury inns are quickly filling up, so if you fancy spending your autumn amongst bright falling leaves, winding between cheddar creameries and cider mills, and enveloped in the salty air of coastal Atlantic towns, start the planning of your custom journey through New England soon.

Alaska

As a general rule, an exploration through the wild terrain of Alaska is not an adventure that you want to enter into haphazardly. It’s a huge state with miles of remote frontier, so you need to have a strategy for how you’ll get where and who will be guiding the way.

Plus, because of the extreme weather, there’s a short window of opportunity in the warmer months to access much of Alaska, meaning high demand for the best places. Not-to-mention, the surge of extreme weather in recent years can be an impediment to seeing certain National Parks (Denali Park Road, in Denali National Park, remains closed through 2026 do to a landslide). For all of these reasons, it’s always best to plan ahead.

Our Alaska luxury travel specialists have handpicked the finest wilderness lodges, expert private guides, and standout experiences so as to design a luxury Alaska vacation to remember. From aquamarine glaciers, steep-walled fjords, majestic grizzlies, endless snow-capped mountain ranges, and breaching humpbacks; there’s an abundance of ‘bucket-list’ Alaska experiences spread across a vast geography.

The Harvest in California Wine Country

Around late September, California wine country bustles with energy during the harvest. Vineyards race to pick their grapes at their peak ripeness, the weather begins to cool and the smell of harvest fills the valleys. This is always an exciting time to visit, but finding reservations in this small wine region can be competitive. The already limited rooms at our favorite boltholes, like the Inn at Newport Ranch in Mendocino or Sonoma’s Farmhouse Inn, won’t last long.

Likewise, the harvest being a time of great culinary celebration, tables will quickly fill up at the many acclaimed (and Michelin-starred) restaurants in California’s wine country region. A key part of All Roads North’s trip planning services is making sure you get the reservations you want and we’ll be keeping an eye on openings at legends like Napa Valley’s French Laundry or Sonoma’s SingleThread Farm for those hoping to indulge their taste buds this year.

Wine Country Inspiration: Napa and Sonoma in Style

Spring Break

It’s always a good idea to plan ahead for spring break, but especially this year. Domestic travel in the U.S. during March is increasing and, in fact, in 2024 airlines saw their busiest March ever. In 2026, numbers are expected to increase even more.

Arizona is a beautiful place to visit in the spring, whether finding rest and relaxation amongst the sacred red rocks of Sedona or searching out adventure in the saguaro cactus-studded desert surrounding Tucson. Or, take advantage of the sun and sea in Southern California. From surfing to hiking to fine dining to art exhibits, you’ll never have to suffer a dull moment. For spring breakers looking for a cultural immersion, look no further than New Orleans. Dynamic and diverse, this city is larger than life in almost every area; not least food, music and history.

Southwest Road Trip Inspiraiton: The Red Rock and Canyon Country of Arizona and Utah

Luxury Ranches

Blending authentic ranch life with luxury bells and whistles is something that the U.S. does best. From Montana to Arizona, many of our favorite ranches consist of several stand-alone cabins with a main lodge centered in their midst– a setup that became popular during Covid due to its inherent socially distanced structure.

Not only the accommodation but also the accompanying activities allow for seclusion. Most luxury ranches, like the Ranch at Rock Creek in Montana or Smith Rock Ranch in Colorado, offer endless outdoor activities, like horseback riding, fishing and hiking, all from one secluded base.

Mountain Towns

Whether you are planning to ski in the winter, raft in the summer or hike amongst golden aspen in autumn, mountain towns never go out of season. The difficult decision isn’t deciding if you want to get away for some alpine fresh air, it’s more of a question of where you’ll go. Here are some of our favorites (and the ones that will book up the fastest):

Jackson, Wyoming is a bit of a dichotomy. On one hand, Jackson is an old western town with wooden boardwalks, swinging saloon doors and its signature elk antler arches in the main square. On the other, it’s a chic mountain town that has become a playground for the well-heeled and adventurous. Aspen, Colorado is similar in that way– with perhaps a little more glitz than grit. What most defines Aspen though is its exceptional natural beauty. Walking down Main Street in Telluride, Colorado, you’ll understand why it’s often described as the quintessential mountain town. The spunk of its mining town origins is miraculously preserved and its location nestled in the valley of a box canyon causes just about any angle of the town to be picture perfect. Taos, New Mexico is a mountain town infused with the blend of Mexican, Spanish and Native American culture that New Mexico is known for. It’s rich in cultural experiences and full of adventurous outdoor activities as well.

Mountain Towns Road Trip Inspiration: Luxury Family Adventure in Colorado

They don’t call it the Last Frontier for nothing… Alaska’s broad expanse of wilderness is an adventurer’s playground. There’s so much to discover: glaciers, pristine lakes, and epic wildlife at every turn. For most remote destinations of a similar description, visitors compromise by leaving luxury, and even comfort, in the rearview mirror. Not so in Alaska, if you know the right places to look.

These wilderness lodges pair everything that is magnetic about Alaska– its wildness, its scenery, its fresh foods– with warm hospitality and high end accommodations. Perfect for people who may fancy hiking a massive glacier and mushing along the Iditarod by day and watching the sunset in a jacuzzi with a glass of wine by night. As true Alaskan locals (and legends), the people behind these lodges are well equipped with the expertise and passion to ensure a quintessentially Alaskan experience.

Tutka Bay is nestled on its own private cove within an ancient glacial fjord in Kachemak Bay State Park. The lodge exemplifies a happy marriage between wilderness and luxury– offering massages, waterside yoga classes and access to explore the stunning Tutka Bay by sea kayak.

The people behind it:

Carl and Kirsten Dixon are the couple behind Within the Wild, a group of luxury adventure lodges in some of Alaska’s most remote corners. The couple sold everything and moved to Alaska in 1983 to start a fishing lodge. Withstanding the learning curve of operating in the wilderness, the Dixons opened Tutka Bay Lodge, their second property, in 2009.

Unmissable experience:

Tutka Bay has one of the most authentic local food programs, not only in Alaska, but in the United States. Owner Kirsten Dixon hosts a daily “cooking school” in an old World War II boat run aground on the property. Expect the menu to be full of ultra-local, seasonal ingredients, such as wild salmon, foraged berries and even reindeer!

Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge

Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge is the only wilderness lodge within Alaska’s vast Kenai Fjords National Park. The lodge sits on the remote banks of a protected lagoon within Aialik Bay, offering guests incredible views of Pedersen Glacier, plenty of wildlife viewing and endless adventure opportunities.

The lodge and 16 comfortable log guest cabins reside within Native-owned Pederson Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary. Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge was developed with deliberate care and concern to minimize its impact on the surrounding area to help protect the Sanctuary for generations to come.

The people behind it:

It’s been over 40 years since Kirk Hoessle began Alaska Wildland Adventures, the adventure travel company behind Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge. When Hoessle visited Alaska in his twenties, the vastness and endless intrigue that Alaska has to offer made a lasting impression and he made it his life goal to share that experience with others.

Unmissable experience:

Take advantage of your proximity to Alaska’s glaciers with a kayaking expedition in Aialik Bay offering close views of waterfalls and the impressive Aialik Glacier. Be on the lookout for sea otters!

Hundreds of miles from paved roads, Ultima Thule exposes visitors to the heart of Alaskan wilderness in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the largest protected reserve in the United States spanning 13.2 million acres of wilderness. The ancient Greeks used the word ultima thule to describe the unknowable realm beyond the northern bounds of their maps. The property lives up to its name, considering the opportunity to experience the unknown on a daily basis is at the heart of the Ultima Thule experience.

The people behind it:

Ultima Thule’s story began in 1958 when John and Elenor Claus settled in this untouched corner under the Homestead Act, which granted land to U.S. citizens who would settle in Alaska. John’s son Paul turned the property into a lodge and named it Ultima Thule in 1982. Today, three generations of Claus family members are still dedicated to running the property.

Learn more about the epic adventures of the Claus family here.

Unmissable experience:

In a land with no roads, it’s all about air travel. Explore your epic surroundings by bush plane. The team can fly you up into a mountain valley, put you down on a sandbar at the edge of the forest, and guide you on a hike that literally no one has ever done before.

Sheldon Chalet

There is no better basecamp to showcase the grand scale and unspoiled beauty of the Alaskan landscape than Sheldon Chalet. The small lodge is perched on a nunatak of Denali’s majestic Ruth Glacier just 10 miles from the summit.

The people behind it:

An aviation legend, Don Sheldon began mapping the vast expanse of the Alaskan Range more than 70 years ago. The rocky outcrop that is now the home of Sheldon Chalet was the only place suitable as a basepoint in this ten-year long endeavor. Don had a vision to share the incomparable beauty of Denali with others through a wilderness lodge, but tragically passed away from cancer before his dream was realized. His children, Kate and Robert, inherited both the rocky outcrop and the vision: under their leadership, Sheldon Chalet was constructed.

Unmissable experience:

Staying in this epic amphitheater of rock is a truly epic experience in and of itself, but the lodge also offers several other mountaineering experiences that can’t be missed. After attending the property’s “Glacier School” for safety information and proper training, head out for a glacier trek lit by the light of the full moon.

Chelatna Lake Lodge

Chelatna Lake Lodge is a fly-in wilderness lodge just outside Denali National Park. The main cedar chalet overlooks the marine waters of Chelatna Lake and the towering Alaska Range in the distance. The culinary team and the knowledge of local guides will make this a truly one-of-a kind experience in the remote backcountry. After a day’s adventuring, end your day taking in the views from the wood-fired sauna set alongside the lake.

The people behind it:

Matt Berke is a lifelong Alaskan resident, a private pilot, and the owner and general manager of Chelatna Lake Lodge. He lives at the property year-round, sharing his love of the Alaskan wilderness with guests.

Unmissable experience:

The waters surrounding the lodge are clean, clear, and incredibly remote– lending itself to the perfect fishing experience. The area is only accessible by aircraft, meaning the wildlife is your only competition in catching rainbow trout and grayling. Whether you are an expert or a beginner, are interested in spin or fly fishing, Chelatna Lake Lodge has something for everyone.

Michael DeYoung wasn’t always a wildlife and adventure photographer.

“What brought me to Alaska was orders from the United States Air Force,” he said.

DeYoung had filed the state on his “dream sheet,” requesting it as a location he’d like to be stationed. After eight years of active duty, his wish was granted. DeYoung and his wife Lauri drove up as newly-weds to start a life in the “Last Frontier.” Living in Anchorage, they found the beautiful dichotomy of a large city with immeasurable wilderness surrounding it.

“Right out [Anchorage’s] back door is wilderness where you can take off with a backpack and walk for the rest of your life and never see somebody,” DeYoung said.

Alaska is easily the USA’s largest state at 586,412 square miles– that’s bigger than Texas, California and Montana combined. And yet, a majority of the land is unpopulated and remote. Even the state capital city, Juneau, is inaccessible by road.

“The sheer scale and size intimidates people, but it’s actually pretty easy to operate in,” DeYoung said. “What Alaska doesn’t have in trails, it makes up for in navigable rivers. Alaska has hundreds and hundreds of navigable rivers that you could float for a week to a month and use that as a vehicle to explore the wilderness.”

Another favorite means of exploration is via floatplane. DeYoung said that it’s common amongst Alaskans to be dropped off somewhere new and either find your way to a road or to a pre-arranged pick up location.

Alaska’s Wild Photography Scene

After some years working for the Air Force as a forecaster, DeYoung began to get involved with the photography community in the area, eventually exiting the Air Force to pursue that work full-time.

When it comes to photography in Alaska, there is no shortage of stunning natural subjects. From the mountain ranges to glaciers to wildlife, Alaska is a photographer’s paradise. In the lower 48 states, most popular photo destinations are just too crowded much the year. In Alaska, escaping the crowd isn’t a problem. Rather, access and knowledge of the land is usually the biggest hurdle to overcome.

“You have to know what locations produce the most striking photos and you have to be there when the light is good,” DeYoung said. “My advantage is, being a former meteorologist and forecaster, I can predict narrow windows of good light that others are going to miss when they listen to general public forecasts.”

Another thing is access– Many of Alaska’s best locations are not road accessible. Do you have access to a float plane or boat? Utilizing air or water taxis and charters in Alaska is just a way of life. In-state, off road transportation is expensive but necessary for access.

Although a challenge, the lack of access to these great shots adds value to the photography experience as well: Even in the Instagram age, outside of a few very popular bear viewing locations, you won’t find crowds in Alaska. The state’s wide open spaces ensure plenty of wildlife viewing spots and remote adventures for everyone, even as the state’s popularity continues to steadily pick up.

The Realities of Seasonal Affective Disorder

So why isn’t everyone rushing to move to the Last Frontier? There are a few sizable cons to measure on the other hand of the numerous pros.

For DeYoung, the decision to leave was a result of seasonal affective disorder.

“When I moved to Alaska, I didn’t really think [seasonal affective disorder] would affect me,” DeYoung said. “But after so many years there– particularly after I got out of the active duty Air Force and started getting into photography– you realize that you have to address that and deal with it and face it. That’s what forced us to leave was the psychological impact of lack of sunlight that you get up there in the winter.”

Due to its northern position on the equator, Alaska receives limited sunlight in the winter months, usually about November to January. In Anchorage, the shortest day of the year consists of about five hours of sunlight. Further north in Alaska’s Arctic region, there are even towns that experience 67 days of darkness.

Some people fear the unknown. The Claus family celebrates it at their remote wilderness lodge, Ultima Thule, in Wrangell-St.Elias National Park.

Ellie Gray, the oldest of the 3rd generation of Alaskan Claus family, grew up with a backyard roughly the same size as Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Switzerland combined. Her family home is deep within Wrangell-St.Elias National Park, the largest protected reserve in the United States spanning 13.2 million acres of wilderness.

Her grandfather, John Claus, moved to this untouched corner of Alaska in 1958 and he and his wife Eleanor became some of the last beneficiaries of the Homestead Act extension, which granted land to U.S. citizens if they settled in the 49th state. Their 5-acre home started out as a no-frills base for trophy hunters, whom John would help guide. When Wrangell-St. Elias became a national park in 1980, the family homestead was grandfathered into the land. In 1982, his son Paul—Ellie’s dad—turned the property into a comfortable lodge with five cabins and named it Ultima Thule.

Ultima Thule, Credit: Arturo Polo Ena

The ancient Greeks used the word ultima thule to describe the unknowable realm beyond the northern bounds of their maps. And the opportunity to experience the unknown on a daily basis is at the heart of the Ultima Thule experience. Paul Claus is known as the king of the Alaskan bush pilots and the family’s fleet of ultralight, Piper Super Cubs have fat, bouncy tires that can land almost anywhere, from alpine ridges to the middle of a calving glacier.

Paul and his wife, Donna, raised their three children– Ellie, Jay and Logan– alongside lodge guests and to this day the lodge is still a family affair. Donna oversees the two massive greenhouses and outdoor gardens, which supply most of the produce for the lodge. Ellie’s grandmother, 87, still bakes cookies every morning and once a week treats guests to her famous pancakes. Ellie and her sister Logan handle the business and logistics side of things while Paul still relishes his role of head adventurer. He’s spent a lifetime exploring this vast untamed wilderness and still hasn’t lost his awe. In an age where everything feels discovered, this is a place that affords a rare opportunity to walk where no human has walked before—a true last frontier. Pure discovery, however, takes effort. And in a world of modern-day convenience and comfort the stamina for true adventure is a fleeting quality in travelers.

Ultima Thule, Credit: Arturo Polo Ena

“The word adventure has been bastardized in the travel industry,” laments Ellie. “No one understands that at the root of adventure is an element of discomfort.” While the lodge itself has unfathomable comforts considering its off-the-grid location 100 miles from the closest road, the adventures Ellie and her family execute are truly unscripted and require a degree of trust and patience.

“A lot of our guests have been to Africa and come to us with the same wildlife expectations,” she says. “We can almost guarantee you will see animals if you book a four-night stay, but we don’t have a bear migration similar to what you see in the plains of Africa.” The iconic imagery of the grizzly catching a fish jumping up from a waterfall, explains Ellie, happens in one specific place in a state twice as big as Texas.

Ellie was born with adventure in her blood and has spent the past few years brainstorming new activities like toting collapsible kayaks in planes so guests can paddle glacial lakes. A new mom, she and her husband, Ben Gray, a pilot with Alaskan Airlines, use their downtime as a family to scout new adventures. “We put our camping gear in the plane, fly 700 miles along the coast and have no agenda,” she says. “It’s our version of car camping.” Those expeditions inspired Ultima Thule’s newest Cessna offerings.

Ultima Thule, Credit: Arturo Polo Ena

“We have lost the ability to be ok with what we don’t know,” she says. “You can’t ask for what you don’t know exists. You have to be willing to give someone the freedom to take you and show you. We are not a tick-the-box Alaska experience kind of lodge. We are a let us show you the best we have to offer and we know it will be a great experience.” The Cessna experiences can access almost any experience in Alaska. If you want to see the caribou migration or the famed photo place where bears catch fish leaping from waterfalls, the Claus family can make it happen.

But it’s not a day trip, nor is it five-star luxury. “Some of these places are so remote you won’t even find a Best Western,” says Ellie. “You’re sleeping on school room floors in a village or in the guest room of our friend’s house.” These new trips are truly an all-access pass to Alaska, but they aren’t for everyone, she says. “We can literally take you to any national park in the state and arrange almost any experience, but it is a true expedition and that requires flexibility as we’re dealing with weather and huge distances and off-the-grid places. But if you have the patience and trust and curiosity it will be a trip unlike any other. A trip that will make you rethink the phrase, life-changing.”

The Dixon family has spent a lifetime pioneering luxury travel in the most remote corners of Alaska. Here they share the most memorable moments of their journey.

It seems fitting that Carl and Kirsten Dixon were married in a log cabin amid a snowstorm to the tune of river songs. The couple behind Within the Wild, a collection of high-end adventure lodges, met at the Alaska Native Medical Center where Kirsten worked in the ICU and Carl worked in the ENT department. They shared a passion for the outdoors and adventure and as soon as their first daughter, Carly was born, sold everything they owned and in 1983 moved to the Yetna River to start a fishing lodge.

“In the beginning, it was all about embarking on an adventure,” says Kirsten. “We knew we wanted to live closer to nature and really didn’t know what we were doing but it worked to our youthful advantage. We were stubborn young people who wouldn’t ever consider failing. Nothing was ever too hard in those early days.”

The couple welcomed a second daughter, Mandy, into the world in 1984 as they welcomed hunters and fishermen to Riversong Lodge. Back then, there was no running water. “It took 50 pumps to fill a bucket with water that I’d heat on the stove and then hang for people to take showers,” recalls Kirsten. “We really learned to MacGyver systems for survival.”

In the 1980s, Alaskan tourism was largely consumptive. Guests were mostly men dressed in camo who drank Budweiser and came to fish and hunt, says Kirsten. She and Carl had a vision of a more sustainable tourism model and in 1994 purchased Winterlake Lodge, an active hunting lodge just south of Denali National Park situated along the Iditarod Trail. “The original owners could never get their head around the fact that someone would pay to see a bear and not kill it,” says Carl. “We wanted to expose our daughters to a different attitude.” The couple started marketing the lodge as a destination for multi-sport activities and wildlife viewing and Kirsten indulged her love of cooking and soon earned a reputation as serving some of the best food in the state.

“We had a lot of European guests at Riversong and some were restaurateurs so I started to learn from them,” she says. When guests invited Kirsten to France, she accepted and attended Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. “You would drive around these French villages and discover tiny, rustic restaurants where the chef prepared outrageously good food,” she says. “That is what I aspired to then and still do. I love serving really good food to travelers. In the early days at Winterlake people would knock on the door in the winter and ask if they could stay the night or buy dinner. They had no expectations and you’d feed them and watch the joy good food can bring people. There is such beauty in moments like that.”

Kirsten’s commitment to French hospitality and quality cuisine and Carl’s commitment to preservation and conservation in the natural world have come to define the Within the Wild brand. In 2009, the couple purchased a second lodge, Tutka Bay, in Kachemak Bay near Homer where Kirsten now has a culinary school and her daughter Mandy helps oversee the culinary programming.

Mandy, who also owns La Baleine Café in Homer, has fond memories of her Alaskan childhood.

She and Carly were homeschooled and Carl would take a boat or snowmobile to retrieve the schoolwork from the mail, 18 miles away. “We ran around barefoot covered in mud,” she says. “I was truly a wild child. I was always in the garden or woods. I learned to drive a boat before I could drive a car. Instead of gym class we would chop firewood, shovel snow or mush dogs.” Dog mushing legend Joe Reddington gifted a 10-year-old Mandy six dogs and running them became part of her daily P.E. routine until she crashed her sled into an airplane. “I broke off part of the airplane wing and that quickly ended my mushing career,” she jokes.

Mandy left Alaska to attend culinary school in Pasadena, Calif. but it didn’t take long for her to realize how special Alaska and its cuisine was. “There’s truly nowhere like it in the world,” she says. “And Homer is coming into its own. It used to be a good ole’ boy fishing community but every day I discover a new sea salt company, meadery, craft brewery, honey company.” This April, Mandy and Kirsten will release Living Within the Wild: Personal Stories & Beloved Recipes from Alaska which serves as a love letter to Alaskan terroir as well as a journal of their favorite family memories.

Carl jokes the lodges now have the same number of chefs as guides. Just as Mandy and Kirsten have brought the culinary programs to award-winning standards, Carl has constantly innovated the adventure offerings at both lodges and recently introduced a high glacier camp at Winterlake Lodge where guests can visit the sled dogs in summer season. Within the Wild has become known for its food and activities, but Carl insists the Alaskan wilderness is what leaves guests in awe. “I remember Carl took me up to the Johnson Glacier in the helicopter and there was a lone wolf standing there in the snow,” says Kirsten. “I felt like I was in the most faraway place in that moment. We really can take guests to places no human has ever been before. That’s a powerful feeling.”
