Taos’ nickname, the Soul of the Southwest, says it all. This small, high desert town nestled at the edge of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico moves at a speed all its own. People come here to both get lost and find themselves. It is truly still the wild west home to wondrous landscapes of sage brushed mesas and plains, a rich Indigenous heritage, art galleries and adobe architecture, serious ski terrain, and miles of hiking trails. A diverse and vibrant food scene has only gotten more exciting since chefs Zak Pelaccio and Jori Jayne Emde put down roots here in 2020. The duo behind award-winning Hudson Valley restaurant, Fish + Game, opened town’s first natural wine bar, Corner Office to much acclaim in 2022. We spoke with the couple about the magnetic pull of Taos and why it’s like nowhere else in the lower 48.

At All Roads North, we believe that a place is nothing without its people. So often, when we ask our clients the most memorable parts of their journey, it’s not the Instagram-worthy landscape or acclaimed hotel that they mention, it’s the encounters they had along the way. That’s why our trips are carefully designed to make those connections, providing you with an authentic and immersive experience. These experiences– whether it be with a local craftsman, musician, chef or marine biologist– are the inspiration for our Connections series, where we talk to friends of All Roads North to get an insider’s look at some of our favorite places across the U.S.

What originally lured you to Taos?

Zak: In 1995, a couple of ski bumming buddies of mine called me up and said I had to get out to Taos and ski at Taos Ski Valley. I flew out with another friend. We slept in sleeping bags on the floors of the dirtbag apartment, in which they were living and skied every day. We hiked Kachina Peak, skied the west basin…the terrain blew my mind. Also, there was no one around, the mountain was quiet; no lift lines, no crowded trails, just bluebird days and steep terrain. In college I had always dreamt of becoming a ski bum, but my career got in the way.

What made you decide to call it home?

Jori: Zak and I were living in the Hudson Valley and running Fish + Game. The winters were slow, long, and dark so we would close and spend our winter breaks away in Taos. We’re both avid lovers of mountains and snow and skiing and I crave the sunshine, and Taos had it all. We bought a house in 2017 and holed up there during the pandemic, then decided to sell our restaurants and our home in New York and make Taos our full-time place.

Taos Pueblo

Three words that describe Taos.

Jori: Land of mañana
Zak: Untethered, anachronistic, expansive

What lives up to the hype?

Zak: The landscape. The light changes every day. The mountains take on different shapes and inhabit different spaces. The weather can change faster than you blink. This is the second largest rift in the world and in that sea of sagebrush and endless horizon the significance of the individual shrinks…and eventually disappears.

What’s underrated in Taos, overrated in Taos, personal favorite, and a recent discovery?

Jori: Underrated: The stone fruit that grows here! Seriously the best apricots, cherries, and plums I’ve ever had anywhere. The Fruit Basket in Velarde (between Santa Fe and Taos) has been in business by the same family since 1598. Overrated: The Motorcycle Rally in Red River each summer (oh man, everyone in Taos is going to hate me now). It’s so loud. Personal Favorite: Chokola Bean to Bar is a worldwide, award-winning chocolatier with exceptional products that blow my mind. Recent Discovery: A man called Harold who has a shop inside his family’s home in the Taos Pueblo has a herd of true wild buffalo on his land outside the Pueblo village and he takes people with him to feed them in the mornings.

What was the inspiration for Corner Office?

Jori: Our wine cellar that we moved with us from New York was down to the final three cases. At the time, nobody in this state sold the wines we wanted to drink so we decided if we were to get the wines we were interested in drinking, we should open a wine bar. Also, there isn’t a natural wine bar in Taos and we felt the town needed that gap filled. The food menu changes seasonally with a few staples that might not ever come off the menu as well
as weekly specials.

Where do you go to get your nature fix?

Jori: The whole place is just one massive nature fix. It’s only a short drive from our house to the parking lot for the hike to Wheeler Peak (the highest peak in New Mexico) or the lot for Lift 1 for skiing. There are a gazillion trails from flat mesa walks to steep climbs everywhere. The Rio Grande is eight minutes from our house and there are lots of trails to traverse via foot or bike down into the gorge for a swim in the summer.

Zak: Go a bit further and you have the Rio Costilla, Valle Vidal, Conejos River, San Luis Valley…it’s all sky and earth here.

The Rio Grande Gorge

What surprised you most about the food scene?

Jori: For a small town, I was surprised by the diversity of the cuisine, from Middle Eastern, Indian, Filipino, farm-to-table, sushi, Mexican, New Mexican, Native cuisine, and more.

Zak: There’s a sense of independence here and also a certain scarcity due to how remote it is, which means people cook for themselves, butcher their own meat, and forage for the country’s best porcini. I think this has created natural relationship with cuisine that is quite unique from other parts of the States in which I’ve lived where a greater variety of products are available and dining out is more of a routine.

Where do you take friends to eat when they’re in town?

Jori: Our standard go-to since we moved here is Medley. We describe it as the town’s tavern. It’s great for groups. There’s something for everyone and they make great cocktails. For lunch, there’s nothing better than Ranchos Plaza Grill for the absolute best red chile sauce in all the land.

What’s your Sunday morning in Taos look like?

Jori: Sunday is our last day of service at Corner Office before our “weekend”,so often the morning is very mellow and depending on my exhaustion level is either some outdoor activity or a cuddle into the couch with a movie or book until it’s time to head to work.

Zak: Tuesday is our Sunday and that means if it’s ski season, I’m up on the mountain, if not, probably a couple hours biking in the desert or Jori, and my dog Waylon and I are down by the Rio Grande, drinking wine, playing in the river, enjoying the sunshine.

For this week’s Connections interview, we spoke with Christy Sing Robertson, a hatmaker and small business owner in Jackson, Wyoming. An outdoors and adventure mecca, Jackson is a captivating gateway to the American West in the heart of the majestic Grand Teton Mountains.

Tell us about your Jackson story?

I moved to Jackson in 2003 to work on a guest ranch and I decided to stay. I got a word from God telling me to move here– and I had never even been here before.

What three words sum up Jackson for you?

Outdoor lovers paradise

What major Jackson Hole attraction lives up to the hype?

The grandeur of the Grand Tetons. They are absolute magic. They rise up in the distance and are so expansive. When you’re staring straight at the mountain range it’s incredibly humbling.

What’s your favorite neighborhood to wander?

Wilson. It’s a little community in Teton county. It’s still a place where old timers, long time Jackson locals and newcomers all live.

Underrated in Jackson Hole, overrated in Jackson Hole, and personal favorite?

What’s underrated is how close Jackson is to the wild. What’s overrated is that Jackson isn’t something here for everyone. This is an outdoor place. There aren’t many indoor options. There’s great restaurants and things like that, but there’s not really much to do indoors.

A personal favorite is a small cafe called Healthy Being Juicery. They have all fresh ingredients, and create their juices and nut milks in small batches. It’s just a small cafe. I love getting the bagel and lox.

By Joeseph Haeberle

What’s your Sunday morning in Jackson Hole?

My Sunday morning looks like church, at the Presbyterian Church of Jackson Hole with my family. I’ve been going to this church for several years with my husband and children.

What restaurant do you take friends from out of town for dinner, a casual local’s favorite, and a weekend brunch?

I’d take friends to Local Restaurant. A favorite local’s spot is Persephone Bakery. And Cafe Genevieve is a great place for a weekend brunch.

Where do you go to get into nature?

I love to hike the local trails. These spaces are so special and precious to locals. I love to get a hard workout in a short amount of time and I love being outside. The sounds and smells, and the beautiful views of nature here. Sometimes I will be able to see wildlife, like deer and elk.

What inspired you to begin your hat business?

I had a similar experience entering hat making as I did moving out here. I heard a word from God in the middle of my happy life to do something different. Both times, it fully uprooted my life. I was working, then this idea to make hats entered my head out of the blue. I did an apprenticeship about a year after I had the idea, and I started my business in 2018. I could try to sound cooler and explain a more concrete reason, but it wouldn’t be true.

Tell us about your New Orleans story?

The first time I visited New Orleans was during Carnival, 1984. My mom came for a work conference so I tagged along. I was 20 years old, in college and had just started working on clarinet. I remember hearing a band in Jackson Square and the music really got under my skin because there was nothing electric, it was all coming straight out of the instruments and hitting my body.

I came back for JazzFest in 1987 and ’88 and the second time I lucked into a house-sitting situation. Went home, got my clarinet, my bike, some clothes and about $100. Came back, got a restaurant job and started house sitting everywhere I could. Started Panorama Jazz Band with a couple friends to play a wedding in 1995. It has gradually evolved into 2 bands (the other is a marching band, Panorama BRASS Band) plus a bunch of recordings under the name PanoramaLand (Check out our song-of-the-month club Good Music For You on BandCamp.com). We play every 1st, 3rd (and occasional 5th) Saturday of the month at The Spotted Cat Music Club, 623 Frenchmen St.

A real neighborhood second-line. There’s nothing else like it anywhere.

What’s your favorite neighborhood to wander?

I do wander around uptown with my dog a fair amount but I still love the Bywater. It has gentrified quite a bit since I lived down there in the 90s. It’s less authentic, less working-class, but spiffier and still very charming.

Underrated in New Orleans, overrated in New Orleans, personal favorite, and recent discovery?

Underrated – the parks, the live oaks; Overrated – most of the tourist traps in the French Quarter; Personal favorite just riding my bike around a pretty day. Dropping in on friends. Recent discovery – A tiny Indian restaurant in Algiers called Plume. Unreal tastes.

What’s your Sunday morning in New Orleans?

Lately, the New York Times with breakfast and green tea followed by meeting for worship at the Friends Meeting of New Orleans (I’m a Quaker).

What restaurant do you take friends from out of town for dinner, a casual local’s favorite, and a weekend brunch?

Dinner: High Hat Cafe on Freret St. Casual local’s favorite: Sarita’s Latin Fusion: they’re like family over there. Weekend brunch: my house!

In City Park, some of the golf courses went to seed after Hurricane Katrina. So there are these wild, overgrown spaces with little sidewalks running through them. There’s also a disc golf course nearby and I like that.

What are the best places to hear live music in New Orleans?

I can vouch for Frenchmen St. It can be hit-or-miss but you can sometimes catch a great band having a good night with an attentive, appreciative audience and you’ll never forget that.

Santa Fe, New Mexico is lauded for many things: its artistry, the desert beauty, its blend of flavors that make up its vibrant culinary scene. But each of these virtues flow from what can be argued as Santa Fe’s most fascinating quality: its depth of history. Aside from being the oldest European community west of the Mississippi, its history long predates the beginnings of colonization in 1607 with eons of Indigenous culture. Today, each layer of the city’s history can be seen in the influences of Spanish, Native American, Mexican and English culture. We spoke with local Santa Fe historian, Ana Pacheco, to hear her perspective on Santa Fe’s intrigue.

Tell us about your Santa Fe story?

My family settled in Santa Fe in 1692; I am the former historian for the city. I am the author of eight books on New Mexico history and the founding publisher and editor of La Herencia, a quarterly magazine on New Mexico history from 1994 through 2009.

What three words sum up Santa Fe for you?

City of Holy Faith.

What’s something that Santa Fe does better than anywhere else?

Santa Fe is a beacon for those in search of healing, self-discovery, and growth. (It has to do with the surrounding mountain vortex).

Canyon Road

What major tourist attraction lives up to the hype?

Canyon Road, which has the highest density of art galleries in the world.

What’s your favorite neighborhood to wander?

The Barrio de Analco, which features the oldest church in the U.S., the San Miguel Mission Church built between 1605 -1608. The Barrio de Analco was given its name by the Tlaxcalan Indians who came as slaves from Mexico with the Spanish Conquistadors in 1598. Analco means “on the other side of the river” in Nahuatl, the native language of the Tlaxcalans. During the day, the Barrio Analco is buzzing with the activity of people visiting the San Miguel Mission. San Miguel is the oldest church in the U.S. built between 1605–1608. Just up the street is the New Mexico State capitol where people like to meander. Santa Fe is such an art town that you can visit the Governor’s Gallery on the top floor of the rotunda – New Mexico’s state capitol is the only round state capitol in the country. Most of the buildings on the east side of the neighborhood were built upon the San Miguel cemetery, the oldest cemetery in town. Throughout the decades there have been several instances of ghost sightings. Few people wander around the Barrio Analco at night for that reason but for those adventurous souls’ ghost hunting is always an option!

Underrated in Santa Fe, overrated in Santa Fe, personal favorite, and recent discovery?

Underrated: The artist market at the Santa Fe Railyard. More visitors need to experience the work of local artists. Overrated: Some of Santa Fe’s high-end restaurants, too expensive with a lack of continuity—one great experience doesn’t equate to an exceptional second visit. Personal favorite: You can’t go wrong with a Frito Pie in Santa Fe. Recent discovery: This summer a street vendor was selling bizcochito ice cream sandwiches on the Santa Fe Plaza. The bizcochito is the New Mexico state cookie made with anise.

What restaurant do you take friends from out of town for dinner, a casual local’s favorite, and a weekend brunch?

The Compound for dinner, Rancho de Chimayo for lunch and La Plazuela at La Fonda hotel for brunch.

Where do you go to get into nature?

Santa Fe is surrounded by parks and trails, so I just walk a couple of blocks from my home to enjoy the great outdoors. I like to walk along Alameda Street which runs parallel to Canyon Road and the Santa Fe River. In the autumn, the leaves of the cottonwood trees changing color and the smell of green chile roasting makes for the most enjoyable two-mile walk in Santa Fe.

What trends are you noticing in Santa Fe right now?

An emphasis on modern art versus traditional and historic art forms.

From your perspective as a historian, what fascinates you the most about Santa Fe’s history?

The history of this nation would not be complete without the story of Santa Fe. Santa Fe is the most historically significant city in this country that has impacted the world through different historical events during different centuries. For example, in 1943 the Manhattan Project and the atomic bomb had their genesis in Santa Fe. Both triumphant and tragic, the development of the bomb changed the course of world history.

Tell us about your Woodstock story?

My parents Jack and Marion Ayres were back to the land folks who purchased the farm and 525 acres in 1945. My grandparents were from southern Vermont, but my parents were living first in Brooklyn and then in New Jersey but wanting to move to the country. They started making candy and selling local cheese that my father figured out a way to wax in cracker sized bars to sell to my Grandmother’s Christmas card list folks and some local stores.

I spent my teenage years earning money for my horse’s upkeep by wrapping cheese. In 1962, I married a sugarmaker/dairy farmer, and we started our maple business and sent our milk from our herd of Jersey cows out to local co-op cheese plants to be made into cheese for us. The mail order business grew especially after the internet became popular and after my Mother’s death, we made her living quarters in the 1865 farmhouse into our farm store.

My two sons, Jeff and Ralph, grew up on the farm, have built homes here and make all the maple syrup from our 10,000 maple trees. We now have two grandchildren in their late 20s that have joined the farm business and hopefully will continue the tradition. I have spent all but the first two years of my life in Woodstock, attended school there, and have been involved with local activities.

What three words sum up Woodstock for you?

Historic, Pretty, Elite

What’s something that Woodstock does better than anywhere else?

Woodstock gives a peaceful setting to help folks relax but still has lots of offers in the way of history, natural beauty, arts, theater, community dinners, and farm-to-table dinners.

Billings Farm Jersey cows

What tourist attraction lives up to the hype?

A few of the events that live up to the hype are Wassail (in early December), Christmas weekend, Bookstock (think authors and book sales), and Taste of Woodstock. As far as attractions go, I think Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Park and Billings Farm and Museum live up to the history part, as well as Calvin Coolidge Historic Homestead in nearby Plymouth. In the arts, Woodstock and neighboring towns have Pentangle Arts, Feast and Field dinners and art, Artistree with Grange Theatre, concerts, gallery and all kinds of art classes. For nature, we have Mt. Tom and Mt. Peg with great hiking trails as well as a river walk.

What’s your favorite neighborhood to wander?

Since Woodstock is pretty small, the village comprises two short main streets with very old buildings and tasteful shops. The “Green,” our village park, is the center of the town with lovely old homes, a covered bridge, historic courthouse and library as well as three lovely churches.

Underrated in Woodstock?

Underrated in Woodstock are our gravel (we call the dirt) roads that let visitors see the real Vermont with beautiful, restored farmhouses, great views, and beautiful stone walls. One news story about our farm said, “ Just the ride to the farm is worth the whole trip.”

What’s your Sunday morning in Woodstock?

Since our farm store is open 9-5 seven days a week, my Sunday morning is the same as any other morning– getting our samples ready for the visitors who come to the farm to taste cheese, maple syrup and our various local jams and mustards.

What restaurant do you take friends from out of town for dinner, a casual local’s favorite, and a weekend brunch?

Best dinner would be Prince and Pauper, a casual local spot would-be Mountain Creamery, and weekend breakfast would be Soulfully Good.

Where do you go to get into nature?

I go on my own 550 acres for nature– we have two well laid out walking and hiking trails for our guests but we also have more secluded walking trails for our own family hidden in the maple woods. Mt. Tom which is part of Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Park has many trails which are all free.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4103" class="wp-image-4103" src="https://www.allroadsnorth.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/8EBABD51-9C91-ED5D-ED0402701E2BA9F0-300x169.jpg" alt="South Peak on Mt. Tom

What trends are you noticing in Woodstock right now?

Lots more farm-to-table places to eat. Vermont has more farmers markets per capita than any other state. There are also more young folks moving to Vermont to start small farms and, since COVID, more professionals moving to Vermont to work remotely.

We love sending clients to places that portray an authentic sense of place. How is Sugarbush Farm a reflection of Woodstock?

You can’t come up with a sense of place more than Sugarbush farm. With three generations of family working together, the history of a farm first settled right after the Revolutionary War, working out of an 1865 farmhouse and so much beauty any time of the year.

For this week’s Connections series interview, we delved deeper into one of the most scenically stunning landscapes in the world: Monument Valley. Any passerby can appreciate the instantly recognizable cathedrals of dramatic red rock formations in Monument Valley, but not so many stop to appreciate the heart of the region: a land rich with centuries of Indigenous history and spirituality. We spoke with Garry Holiday– a local member of the Navajo tribe, lifelong resident of Monument Valley, and owner of family-run guide company Navajo Spirit– to learn more about the layers of culture to be discovered in this breathtaking part of the country.

At All Roads North, we believe that a place is nothing without its people. These experiences– whether it be with a local craftsman, musician, chef or marine biologist– are the inspiration for our Connections series, where we talk to friends of All Roads North to get an insider’s look at some of our favorite places across the U.S.

Tell us about your Monument Valley story?

My Name is Garry Holiday. I was born and raised in Monument Valley. Monument Valley, although a small place, is rich in history and culture. As a Dine’ (Navajo), I feel fortunate to have been both born and raised in a location that is still connected to native Language culture and a rich family history. My family is originally from Monument Valley. Our family stories are entrenched in the landscape and that gives me a much deeper love and appreciation for the beauty of what I can share with others who visit. If I go away and return, I always feel as though I am in a holy place.

Sean Holiday

What three words sum up Monument Valley for you?

An Ancient Playground

What is something Monument Valley offers that is like nowhere else?

Monument Valley is rich in so many ways. The rock formations are arguably the most unique and beautiful formations in the world. There is never a day that the landscape looks the same. Nature changes sometimes from minute to minute as a quick storm can bring beautiful waterfalls; the clouds can change the lighting making it so photographic. I love the sunrise and sunsets in Monument Valley. At night, the stars are clear and many times you can see the Milky Way. It is one of the best places to stargaze. There are also more ancient sites in our area than anywhere else in the Nation. The Anasazi left beautiful rock art and structures in the rocks that are incredible. Many of these sites have been left untouched by archeologists. Some of these sites date to 12,000 years ago.

What part of Monument Valley do visitors like most?

Monument Valley is iconic so most people want to come and experience where the films are made. They love the 2.5 to 3.0 hour experience. Although our most popular experience is the All day trip which includes Monument Valley as well as another location that is connected called Mystery Valley. This is where you can see many of the arches and ancient sites.

Sean Holiday

Where is my favorite part of the park to wander?

That is a hard question. I love music and playing the flute or drums. The best place to do this is in the Natural Amphitheater in Monument Valley, a place called “the big Hogan.” I also like a place in Mystery valley called the pancakes. It is a small hike to where you can sit on the rocks, meditate, and look out at the panorama of Mystery Valley and Mitchel butte. It’s just amazing at sunset! The third and most beautiful place is on Hunts Mesa. It’s a place that only a few visit and I feel lucky to be able to hike the overlook view. Incredible!

What part of Monument Valley’s history do you find most fascinating?

A long time ago the cavalry rounded up the Navajo people to participate in the Long Walk which was a forced removal from our ancestral lands. but what you don’t know is that the People in Monument Valley revolted against the United States Cavalry at this time and were able to defend their home. They hid away from the Cavalry and were among the few that were never captured against them. They were able to use their resources and their surroundings to evade capture and they continued to live as a free people, able to practice our traditions and culture. And even help those that were captured by giving the food and resources they had. To help them subsist and inspire them during hard times. Monument Valley was also a strong hold from other Navajo people who came from other areas of Navajoland for protection. We still celebrate Navajo Independence Day due to this history.

Sean Holiday

What is a recent Discovery and personal favorite?

Many of our discoveries are found away from our daytime trips to the Park. There are thousands of ancestral dwellings that scatter across the Monument Valley area that are protected by the Navajo Tribe and our local People. It truly feels like finding treasure every time we discover something new. Within the last year two of our guides went on an adventure to a place no one had been to for a very long time that took a full day of hiking. They found a very large ruin, and even more magical, a baby’s cradle board. It was still mostly intact and you can imagine the feeling of history that there was a little baby who was so cared for. This was found in an Anasazi ruin however it was a Navajo cradle board that had been left behind long ago. There are clues to our people connecting with each other and these are the discoveries that make us so passionate about learning of our history and culture even more. We keep everything as it was and don’t touch anything when we find these discoveries but even being in the presence is a sacred experience. We know others are not allowed to these locations so these experiences are ones that we are so honored to have.

Where do you take friends from out of town to eat in the Monument Valley area? What about a casual local’s favorite spot?

Our favorite restaurant is just about 25 minutes from Monument Valley in a little town called Kayenta, AZ. It is called Amigo Cafe and is run and owned by a Navajo family. They are wonderful and you can watch their journey on Restaurant Impossible. We take all our friends and family here while also stopping in at our local Flea Market which happens every Wednesday in Kayenta, AZ. This is where you can find all the authentic Navajo foods that you can hardly find anywhere else. It is a little niche spot that mostly locals know about. We always tell anyone we can to stop in and enjoy the traditional food.

How can visitors be sure to support the Navajo community when visiting Monument Valley?

We always recommend stopping at the local stands and shops in Monument Valley. There are some amazing artists on the Navajo Nation and most of them can be found on the side of the roads selling their crafts. You can learn so much from them but also support them by buying directly from them. I have met elderly grandmothers and grandfathers who make their own juniper necklaces for protection, or the most talented silversmiths, rug weavers, basket weavers or potters who make the most unique and traditional pieces just off the sides of the highways and in Monument Valley Tribal Park as well. We always advise to buy directly from the source.

Tell us about your Bentonville story?

Bentonville became my family’s hometown in 2005 and has been an exceptional place to raise our family. Little did I know I would have the extraordinary opportunity to be on the founding staff of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in 2011 and its second location, the Momentary, in 2020. Today I’m serving as the Deputy Director of Crystal Bridges and the Interim Director of the Momentary.

What three words sum up Bentonville for you?

Vibrant, Collaborative, Entrepreneurial. If I had two more words they would be friendly and innovative.

What’s something that Bentonville does better than anywhere else?

While Bentonville is one of the nation’s fastest growing cities, its residents work hard to keep the historic and quaint identity of the town. It is captured well by USA Today who described Bentonville as Manhattan dressed as Mayberry.

What well-known “tourist attraction” lives up to the hype?

In just over a decade, Crystal Bridges has become one of the most visited museums in the country, and for good reason. Five centuries of American art, 120 acres of trails to explore, stunning architecture, and stellar food draw visitors from across the globe.

What’s your favorite neighborhood to wander?

Downtown Bentonville is the place to be. A new restaurant or bar is popping up all the time, music plays on the downtown square, and boutiques and galleries abound. Saturday morning farmer’s market is a must!

Underrated in Bentonville, overrated in Bentonville, personal favorite, and recent discovery?

A not-to-miss gem is the Museum of Native American History. The Scott Family Amazeum is hands-on fun for kids of any age. For adults, the Tower Bar at the Momentary overlooking the growth of the town with delicious cocktails is a favorite. And, of course, visit the iconic Walmart Museum, featuring the original Walton 5 & 10 and the Spark Café (don’t miss the ice cream!)

Onyx Coffee Lab

What’s your Sunday morning in Bentonville?

Grab a latte at Onyx Coffee Lab or a smoothie from Sunny’s while reading the Sunday paper, then head over to Louise for an amazing brunch while watching the planes at Thaden Field. Afternoon could be a walk on the trails, a visit to the latest exhibition at Crystal Bridges, poolside at Blake St. House, or the latest movie at the boutique Skylight Cinema. We always check the calendar for concerts, lectures, culinary programs, and other amazing offerings happening around town.

What restaurant do you take friends from out of town for dinner, a casual local’s favorite, and a weekend brunch?

The cuisine at Bar Cleeta is one of our guests’ favorites, especially paired with their incredible wine list. Preacher’s Son, situated in a former church, is always a hit. My husband and I love street tacos from Yeyo’s Mexican Grill or fresh fish from Blu Fish House. PressRoom, Tusk & Trotter, and Table Mesa – all on the square – serve a scrumptious brunch.

Where do you go to get into nature?

Some of my favorites are the art trails at Crystal Bridges, the walk from the museum to the Bentonville square by Compton Gardens, the nature walk to the gorgeous Mildred Cooper Chapel designed by E. Fay Jones, the bike ride (or walk) at Coler Mountain Bike Preserve to enjoy Airship coffee, or Tanyard Creek Nature Trail. A short drive away to Boxley Valley (look for elk!), young families love hiking Lost Valley. More adventurous hikers love picturesque Hawksbill Crag. Floating the historic (first national river) Buffalo River is a fun rite of passage for those in Northwest Arkansas. My family also loves flyfishing in the Beaver tailwaters on the White River.

What trends are you noticing in Bentonville right now?

The quality of life is drawing families and the working class to relocate from national locations to Bentonville. Many are drawn by the hundreds of miles of biking trails – we are known as the Mountain Biking Capital of the World. Co-working spaces are popping up (the Ledger is the world’s first bikeable building) to serve professionals who are working locally or remotely to other parts of the U.S. but have chosen to live in Bentonville.

What role has Crystal Bridges and the Momentary played in Bentonville’s growth, both in regards to the town’s art scene and in general?

Crystal Bridges and the Momentary have played pivotal roles in transforming Bentonville into a thriving cultural and artistic hub. Beyond inspiring the town’s art scene, they have had a broader impact on its economy through tourism and other economic drivers.

Contact us here to start planning your unique journey to Bentonville. Depending on your preferences, All Roads North specializes in facilitating unique experiences beyond the typical museum visit. For example, we can arrange a private art expert to lead you in a deep dive of Crystal Bridge’s architecture or American art collections. For an even more immersive experience, we recommend a private dinner party in the Frank Lloyd Wright house. Begin the evening with a cocktail in hand while walking with an architecture expert through the house and grounds. End with a customized, five-course meal and wine pairing.

Tell us about your Healdsburg story?

Hello, I’m Chantal Forthun, winemaker for Flowers Vineyards & Winery in Healdsburg. For the past decade, I’ve had the fun privilege of making Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that amplify the wild natural spirit of the far Sonoma Coast, where our high-elevation estate vineyards are situated.

My Healdsburg story begins about 12 years ago when I was visiting friends in the area. I was immediately and indelibly struck by the bucolic beauty while driving on Eastside Road. The golden-hour sunlight was hitting the sea of undulating vineyards in the most perfect manner. I couldn’t believe how beautiful the landscape was, and how I was just discovering it for the first time! Furthering my budding love for Healdsburg was the interplay between locals and tourism — the community seemed so unified through its deep and solid roots.

What three words sum up Healdsburg for you?

Food & Wine Mecca.

What’s something that Healdsburg does better than anywhere else?

Genuine and warm hospitality and appreciation for the land, born from Healdsburg’s agrarian roots.

What major “tourist attraction” lives up to the hype?

Healdsburg Plaza – a convivial community gathering spot framed by redwoods and date palms, and flanked by some of the world’s best restaurants and wineries.

What’s your favorite neighborhood to wander?

I love the historic architecture of the homes downtown, so that’s the neighborhood I frequent the most.

Underrated in Healdsburg, overrated in Healdsburg, personal favorite, and recent discovery?

Underrated: Shopping around the Plaza. Ooh La Lux and Jam Jar are some of the sweetest boutiques that embody the Healdsburg lifestyle.

Overrated: World-class dining in our backyard means that reservations at highly rated (not overrated!) destinations such as SingleThread are hard to come by! To avoid disappointment, it’s well worth it to plan ahead and make a reservation months in advance. The beautifully curated dining experience will certainly reward your pre-planning efforts!

Personal favorites: Healdsburg Farmers’ Market (Saturday mornings!), and live music during the summer at Tuesday in the Plaza

Recent discovery: Maison Healdsburg — grower champagne at your fingertips!

Downtown Healdsburg

What’s your Sunday morning in Healdsburg?

Grab a coffee and a pastry at Quail & Condor. Take a leisurely stroll through the Plaza. Check out Little Saint Farms’ farmstand at Little Saint. Pop into Marine Layer to say hello to friends and have a splash of Chardonnay from the Sonoma Coast.

What restaurant do you take friends from out of town for dinner, a casual local’s favorite, and a weekend brunch?

Bardiva is my go-to for out-of-town guests. The stylish barn architecture and culinary spotlight on fresh, local, and seasonal ingredients is quintessential Healdsburg.

Hands-down casual local’s favorite is Guiso Latin Fusion. This family-owned & operated eatery is super small, with only a handful of tables. The intimate setting coupled with lively stories told by one of the servers (also the father of the chef!) makes you feel like part of the family. And, the pupusas are not to be missed.

For weekend brunch, I love The Parish Cafe — a taste of New Orleans in Sonoma County.

Sonoma Coast

Where do you go to get into nature?

There are so many great nature spots around Healdsburg, but I always gravitate toward the Sonoma Coast for its dramatic landscape and salty sea breezes. The Kortum Trail hike out to Goat Rock Beach, where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean, is one of my favorites. Rocky coastline meets windswept coastal forest — and seals! It’s also a hop, skip, and a jump from our coastal estate vineyards.

What trends are you noticing in Healdsburg right now?

The diaspora of talented chefs who cut their teeth at Michelin-starred restaurants going out on their own with inspiring new additions to the local culinary scene. Troubadour Bakery and Molti Amici, to name a few new greats.

We love sending clients to places that portray an authentic sense of place. How does Flowers encapsulate the Healdsburg region?

Architecturally, House of Flowers was designed as an homage to the natural landscape of the Russian River Valley, and to the wild natural elements of our coastal estate vineyards where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean. Our space is filled with natural materials, earthy hues, abundant natural light, and ever-present views of the surrounding redwoods, vineyards, and mountains that define our local landscape.

BS: I’m a 6th generation Texan, born in New Braunfels. I moved to San Antonio in 1985 to begin my hospitality career in Marketing luxury hotels and spas. Joined Hotel Emma two years before opening to develop the brand and launch the independent hotel in a new destination within the destination of San Antonio, and am now the Chief Marketing Operator of the hotel.

What three words sum up San Antonio for you?

South Texas Culture

What’s something that San Antonio does better than anywhere else?

I always refer to Will Rogers, who said that there are four truly unique cities in the U.S.– New Orleans, Boston, San Francisco and San Antonio. What makes us unique is that we have so many cultures blended together in our city– the German, the Spanish, the Mexican, the Wild West, and the South. You may see that through architecture. If you go into one of the older neighborhoods like Alamo Heights or Olmos Park, you’ll find German-style homes with Spanish tile roofs. In our food, you’ll definitely see that blending too. For example, you might find a bratwurst taco, blending the German and the Mexican.

What major tourist attraction lives up to the hype?

San Antonio Missions

Our World Heritage UNESCO site- our Missions. I like it because it’s authentic. These missions date back to the Spanish in the 1700’s, and there are hundreds of years of history preserved there. You get a real sense of history and what it was like many years ago. There’s only so many UNESCO Heritage sites in the world and they are the first and only UNESCO site in Texas.

What’s your favorite neighborhood to wander?

Chabot House on Madison Street in King William Historic District.

The King William District. It’s on the south side of the river. The Germans settled along the river because they needed water to run their mills. So the neighborhood started as where the Gunther house flour mill was. There are a lot of beautiful Victorian homes that have been preserved that were built in the 1800s. It also borders what we call Southtown, where there are lots of little one-of-a-kind bars, restaurants and a younger part of San Antonio.

Underrated in San Antonio and overrated in San Antonio?

The San Antonio lifestyle is underrated. Out of Texas’ four cities, people often think of Dallas as sophisticated, Houston as metropolitan and Austin as cultured, but don’t know what to make of San Antonio. People don’t realize that it’s the perfect junction between a small town lifestyle in a big city. The cost of living is affordable, there’s no traffic, and you see people you know out and about all the time. Overrated: Theme parks.

What’s your Sunday morning in San Antonio?

McNay Art Museum in Alamo Heights

Long walks with my husband and our French Bulldog, Bernadette, to our favorite coffee shop in Alamo Heights. We live in Olmos park, and we’re running into people we know all the time. Again, it’s that small town, slow pace, Sunday morning pace of life. We have great coffee shops and bakeries we can stop by, and we can sit back and read the paper.

What restaurant do you take friends from out of town for dinner, a casual local’s favorite, and a weekend brunch?

For dinner, we have several great spots: a Mediterranean place called Ladino, or the French spot, Brasserie Mon Chou Chou. Soluna Mexican restaurant is our favorite local hangout. It has the best margaritas. Supper at Hotel Emma is great for brunch.

Where do you go to escape the city?

Lake McQueeney

Lake McQueeney to our Lake-house. It’s about 30 minutes out, so a really quick trip. For me, it’s very nostalgic. That’s where I learned how to water ski, where we used to go to celebrate birthdays growing up. It’s nothing fancy, not like Lake Austin. It’s just a peaceful place to kick back and relax.

What trends are you noticing in San Antonio right now?

The thirty-something generation is moving back to San Antonio, and along with that we’re seeing more live music and more artists. The city is becoming a bit more progressive, but still holding onto its heritage. I hate to use the word, but I guess it’s just gotten more “hip.” San Antonio used to be kind of touristy with the Alamo, and River Walk and such, but now that’s changing. There are more and more restaurants that are one of a kind, rather than chain restaurants. For example, Hotel Emma is an independent hotel and the Pearl, where its located, only has unique restaurants.

People are moving to San Antonio now, but probably not as much as they are to Austin and Dallas. We don’t have the big tech jobs. But with the pandemic and remote work, we’ve seen people being able to live here and benefit from the lower cost of living, while still working in more major markets and thats been a big draw.

How does Hotel Emma reflect authentic San Antonio?

Emma is like visiting an interesting friend’s well appointed home in San Antonio with genuine South Texas Hospitality… you never want to leave. We also do a great job of reflecting San Antonio’s blending of cultures.
