You probably know about Upstate New York’s creative mecca, Hudson Valley, but have you heard of the nearby Massachusetts Berkshires?

A rural region in the mountains of western Massachusetts dotted with villages and towns, the Northern Berkshires is known for its rich cultural and artistic scene, as well as its fall foliage and overall rustic idyll. 

We spoke with Nina Keneally, a former theater producer and gallerist and friend of All Roads North, to get the intel on this flourishing artistic oasis.

“You could probably find a new trail to hike every day of the year for at least three or four years because there is so much nature, but especially in the summer season, you also couldn’t begin to do everything that’s offered here artistically,” Keneally said.

History of the Arts in the Berkshires

The Berkshires’ convenient location just a few hours away from Boston and New York City has long provided the perfect country escape for wealthy city folk. Where the money went, the arts soon followed. 

“Especially in the Southern Berkshires, a lot of arts developed here because people had summer homes here. It’s always been a summer escape for those artists– classical artists, musicians and dancers,” Keneally said.

Centers of education like Williams College also contributed to the cultural scene by supplying strong arts programs and attracting young creatives. Thomas Krens was director of the Williams College Museum of Art and an integral figure in the Berkshires’ artistic renaissance. During his time at Williams, inspiration struck him for an unlikely contemporary art museum in the Berkshires.  

“Thomas Krens knew about this building in North Adams, which had once been an electric plant but had been vacant since the 70’s,” Keneally said. “He had the idea to put this contemporary art museum there that could handle very large works of art that really didn’t have anywhere else to go. That was the genesis of MASS MoCA.”

Krens’ latest vision is for a new museum focused on model railroads and architecture in the Northern Berkshires, which is currently under construction. The project, called the Extreme Model Railroad and Contemporary Architecture Museum, promises to deliver a “museum-theme park” experience, completed as early as 2025.

2. Buffalo AKG Art Museum

The Albright-Knox Gallery recently reopened as the Buffalo AKG Art Museum after a four-year closure and the most significant campus expansion and development project in the museum’s 160-year history. The museum is now open, while the Gundlach Building remains closed for essential work until July 20, 2023. The new Buffalo AKG will comprise more than 50,000 square feet of state-of-the art exhibition space, five classrooms, an interior community gathering space, and more than half an acre of new public green space. The museum’s collections span some of the greatest moments in art through the centuries, from a well-represented Impressionism collection including works by the likes of Monet, Degas and Van Gogh to ongoing representation of emerging contemporary artists.

3. Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation, at the American Museum of Natural History   

New York City, NY

In May of 2023, Manhattan’s legendary American Museum of Natural History opened its expansive Richard Gilder Centre for Science, Education and Innovation. The 230,000-square-foot addition includes new exhibition galleries and one of a kind experiences, such as an insectarium and butterfly vivarium. The new glass and stone construction is fully integrated with the rest of the museum on all four floors, and in fact also was intended to add a more cohesive flow to the overall campus. Visitors have many fascinating exhibitions to see, from a projections gallery focusing on the “Invisible Worlds” of DNA and the human brain, to a transparent skybridge that doubles as a pathway for the largest leafcutter ant colony in the United States. 

4. National Museum of Women in the Arts

The National Museum of Women in the Arts is undergoing the top-to-bottom renovation and restoration– the first that the building has gone through since 1987. The museum will reopen on October 21, 2023 with enlarged gallery space, a new destination for researchers and education programs, enhanced amenities and accessibility for visitors as well as infrastructure and storage upgrades to improve the long-term conservation and security of the museum’s collection of more than 5,500 works.

Recently opened in October 2022, the Modernism Museum is a must-visit destination for art and design enthusiasts seeking to immerse themselves in Palm Springs’ iconic mid-century modern aesthetic. The museum showcases a stunning collection of art, furniture, and architectural pieces that epitomize the innovative spirit of the mid-20th century. From sleek furniture designs by renowned figures like Charles and Ray Eames to striking abstract artworks by influential artists, the museum offers a comprehensive exploration of the cultural significance and enduring impact of mid-century modernism.

6. The Punk Rock Museum

Las Vegas, NV 

Vegas’ new Punk Rock Museum opened January of 2023 as an immersive tribute to the rebellious and influential subculture that emerged in the 1970s. The museum houses the world’s most expansive, intimate display of punk artifacts, fliers, photos, clothing, instruments, handwritten lyrics, and artwork. The museum goes beyond mere observation, allowing visitors to pick up real bass guitars used by renowned punk musicians, including members of Strung Out and Rise Against, and unleash their inner punk rock spirit. 7. The Museum of Broadway

New York City, NY 

After five years in the making, the Museum of Broadway opened in November of 2022 paying homage to the rich musical heritage that defines Broadway. The museum immortalizes hundreds of rare costumes, props, and artifacts from iconic productions like Hamilton and The Phantom of the Opera. It also delves into the world of set design with intricate models and captivating sketches, revealing the artistry behind the stage. The museum also invites guests to traverse a detailed timeline of Broadway history, providing a cultural context for legendary productions like the Ziegfeld Follies while seamlessly transitioning to the modern era.

8. Clotilda: The Exhibition at Africatown Heritage House

Mobile, AL 

Opening on July 8, 2023, the Africatown Heritage House, a site at the History Museum of Mobile, will debut its Clotilda exhibit, detailing the stories of the 110 African men, women, and children brought to Mobile aboard the ship called Clotilda. In 2019, Mobile captured national attention with the discovery of the long-lost remnants of the ship in the Mobile River– the final documented vessel to transport enslaved Africans to the United States during the mid-19th century. The exhibition will feature pieces of the sunken ship, as well as exhibits sharing the story of Africatown, the community that formed after the ship reached the shore.

What is Mid-Century Modern Architecture?

All Roads North spoke to mid-century modern expert Brad Dunning, who is curating an upcoming exhibition on prominent mid-century modern architect Albert Frey at the Palm Springs Art Museum. 

“Mid-century modern is a term used to roughly describe the dominant new style in graphic design, interior design and  architecture from the period right after WWII until post modernism which raised its confounding head in the 70s which was in response or reaction to mid-century modernism,” Dunning said.

The most recognizable features of mid-century modern design include clean lines, simple forms, and the use of new materials like concrete, steel, and glass. Bright colors and bold geometric shapes are also common, as is an emphasis on living spaces that flow seamlessly from indoors to outdoors. In every element, the style aspires to a seamless connection between the surrounding landscape and the built environment.

The History of Mid-Century Modern Design

Mid-century modern design emerged in the 1950’s and 1960’s in Palm Springs, a period of post-World War II prosperity and optimism when the possibility of owning a second home became more attainable.

Although mid-century modern design is mostly considered to have been born in the U.S., Dunning said that the designs and philosophies of an influential German design school called Bauhaus served as the main touchstone for the style. The school favored unadorned, pure design, leaving behind superfluous decoration and ornamentation. 

Mid-Century Modern Architecture In Palm Springs

The Kaufmann House

“The sun, the pure air, and the simple forms of the desert create perfect conditions for architecture.” – Albert Frey, 1903 

The desert landscapes and the forward-thinking spirit of California provided the perfect setting for mid-century modern architecture to thrive in Palm Springs. Due to post-war prosperity and optimism, the “leisure class” lifestyle was available to middle and upper class citizens like never before. Plus, technological advances and social trends– such air conditioning and the popularity of golf– set the scene for Palm Springs’ fate as a seasonal destination. The desert town came to be a popular getaway for Hollywood celebrities and other affluent individuals seeking a glamorous lifestyle. Several stars– the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra– frequented the Palm Springs. 

“Being second homes, the owners [of new houses in Palm Springs] were more willing to embrace or consider a more flamboyant or daring design since the home was not reflecting their more staid or conservative lifestyle back home, reflected in their main residences,” Dunning said. 

Several architects were key in shaping the development of mid-century architecture’s popularity in Palm Springs.

“Swiss-born and Le Corbusier-trained architect Albert Frey paved the way for what is now known as the “Palm Springs School”– a once-in-a lifetime coalescence of highly talented and inventive architects who did residential and commercial architecture all in the small desert town,” Dunning said. “Locals like William Cody and Donald Wexler, and travelers from nearby Los Angeles like John Lautner and Richard Neutra.”

The architects and designers who worked in Palm Springs during this era drew inspiration from the desert landscape, incorporating natural materials and creating spaces that blurred the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.

Some of Frey’s most notable mid-century works include Frey House II and the Tramway Gas Station. Neutra’s iconic buildings include the Kaufmann House and the Grace Lewis Miller House.

The Future of Mid-Century Modern

Although mid-century modern design initially developed and gained popularity in the 50’s and 60’s, the style was rediscovered in the late 80’s, and the popularity shows little signs of waning, Dunning said. 

“Many, myself included, now posit that 20th century mid-century style is the dominant design direction and influence even now well into the 21st century, and, in fact, it may be a bigger overall movement than when it was when it was in its nascent stages decades ago,” Dunning said. “I keep waiting for the midcentury wave to break but right now people are still surfing the crest ….and still enjoying the ride.”

You can learn a lot about a place by delving into antique maps. They showcase the universal human drive to explore in such a poignant, physical way. In addition to a long history providing the potential for intriguing, old maps, Charleston is privy to some incredible art depicting its distinct flora and fauna. Artists like John J. Audubon did some of his best work in the Charleston area. So it came to be that, in a city that’s so well-known for both its history and natural beauty, I asked Laura for her insight into the wonderful world of antique maps and prints:

What have you learned about Charleston throughout your career?

Gosh! Too much! Charleston has been one of the centers of the New World for naturalists such as Mark Catesby (A Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands, 1734), Alexander Garden, John J. Audubon and both his sons, (Birds of America, 1827-1838), Andre Michaux (The North American Sylva, 1853). William Bartrum (Travels through North & South Carolina, Georgia, …, 1791). Three wars, numerous hurricanes, fires, and earthquake! Then all the other artists from all over the world who came and illustrated our lovely city, capturing her in good times and bad: Xanthus Smith, William Aiken Walker, Alfred Hutty, Elizabeth O’Neill Verner. Then the writers: Edgar Allen Poe, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, Joel and Ira Gershwin, John Bennett. I can go on..

What is an interesting piece you’ve recently found?

I have a map in restoration right now that is extremely rare and is a showstopper. It is a huge map of the city of Charleston, and it was one of only 100 printed. Each was signed and numbered, and the name to whom it was given is written on the map. There are a couple in the collections of libraries and institutions but other than the last one I sold, I could only find one in the last 20 years offered up for sale.

Do you have an all-time favorite piece? If so, what about it captures your attention.

It is difficult to say I have a favorite piece. I have favorite artists and I like some better than others. It would be hard to narrow them down to less than two, and in no particular order: Maria Sibyla Merian and Mark Catesby.

I can say I love how some people react to a piece and I am still fascinated by how these pieces were made and the difficulties the artist and mapmakers had to endure to get them made. The exploration, finding patrons to fund the project, having an open mind and the curiosity to record what they were witnessing, the notes and sketches. Then taking everything back home, finding a publisher, sourcing handmade paper, fabricating metal plates or stones, finding the best artist to translate by engraving the illustrations from original paintings and drawings, inking the plates by hand, pulling the print, hiring scores of colorists to color each one correctly, setting type to print the text, then to bind and make books and atlases. Each and every one is very labor intensive– more than just a blue bird on a print.

Where do you source or search for the pieces that are curated in the shop?

The truth is over 65% finds me. We have been here in Charleston since the 1940’s. I have pieces offered to me daily. Some we sold before and the owner wants to downsize, or kids don’t want, some because they want something better, some because they inherited them and rather have money.

I have print dealer friends all over the world and we know what each other like, so if I have something I think they could sell or if they have something I could use, all we have to do is send an email or make a call. I do buy some at auction. I don’t buy at American auctions; most auctions now are online and many who bid here are used to buying retail and I have to drop out when I don’t think I can make a profit.

What draws you to the natural history of the Charleston area in your work?

I know I have personal connections to the maps and prints for the same reason many do. My Grandmother gave us a subscription to National Geographic every year. My dad would read to my sister and myself about those far off places. We would study the maps and then locate those places on the world map. Then to talk about Natural History, my earliest visual memory of a piece of art was the Audubon Mockingbird hanging in my grandmother’s dining room. I remember Dad telling me to look and see how noisy that print was. How loud those mockingbirds were fussing at the snake after their eggs and the sound of the rattle of the snake. The funny thing about the print now that I am an adult, rattle snakes can climb but rarely do and there has been much discussion about Audubon’s mistake in illustrating it that way.

While the largest such undertaking, James Turrell’s Roden Crater, is nearing its completion in the Arizona desert, plenty of other monumental Land Art Installations are ready to be experienced right now.

What exactly is Land Art? Born out of curiosity and the need to break the norm, such daunting art projects are nurtured by passion and dedication, often take years to complete, are huge in scale and can be found in the middle of nowhere. Their remote location allows them to interact with nature, sunlight and night skies in the most optimal way, void of any noise or light pollution. They inspire and invite us to become part of the space.

We encourage you to visit and discover some of them next time “the road comes calling”.

Double Negative, Nevada

Contemporary American land artist Michael Heizer said of his 1970 work Double Negative, “There is nothing there, yet it is still a sculpture,” and he wasn’t exaggerating. Composed of two long trenches measuring 30 feet wide and 50 feet deep cut into Nevada’s Mormon Mesa near Overton. The work is more a commentary on what has been removed from the site – that is, the negative space created by the trenches – than what the work actually appears as. Double Negative can only be accessed by four-wheel drive.

Spiral Jetty, Utah

Late artist Robert Smithson’s colossal work of Land Art is a 15-foot wide path that reaches outward, then coils into itself,1,500 feet long in the Great Salt Lake, Utah. Constructed in 1970 near Rozel Point, the path was built with more than 6,000 tons of black basalt rock. The Spiral Jetty is periodically submerged by rising water levels, before regional droughts allow it to resurface, during which times visitors may circle along the path.

Seven Magic Mountains, Nevada

Ugo Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains

Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone’s Seven Magic Mountains is a large-scale, site-specific public art installation located near Las Vegas, Nevada. Seven towers of colorful, stacked boulders standing more than thirty feet high punctuate the Mojave with a burst of form and color. The creative expression of human presence in the desert will be on view through May 2018.

Sun Tunnels, Utah

Four enormous tunnels laid opposite each other in an “X” formation, are the late Nancy Holt’s work of Land Art in the Utah desert. Each tunnel is 18 feet long and nine feet in diameter, pierced with holes of irregular size arranged according to certain constellations: Capricorn, Columba, Draco and Perseus. These holes shed pinpricks of light on the otherwise dark interiors of the tubes, shifting along with the daylight. The tunnels are perfectly aligned to watch the rising and setting sun as well as the summer and winter solstices.

The Lightning Field, New Mexico

In 1977, Walter De Maria dotted a barren remote area in the western New Mexico desert with 400 stainless steel poles. The two inches in diameter and over 20 feet high poles are situated in columns and rows equidistant from each other, in a grid that’s a mile wide and a kilometer long. Though the pointed tips atop each pole do invite electrostatic discharge, the enjoyment of the work does not depend on lightning striking.

Untitled Works in Concrete, Texas

Donald Judd’s Untitled Works in Concrete at the Chinati Foundation

In the 1970s, minimalist artist Donald Judd moved to Marfa, Texas, where he created giant works of art that bask beneath vast desert skies. The fifteen concrete works, that are as empty and remote as the landscape, were scattered in the scrubby pasture. They were cast and assembled on the site over a four-year period, from1980 through 1984. The individual units that comprise each work have the same measurements and are made from concrete slabs that are each 25 centimeters thick.They were the first works to be installed at a site that has since morphed into a museum, the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas.
