What’s the origin story of Blackberry Farm?

My in-laws, Kreis Beall White and Sandy Beall, started Blackberry Farm as a six-room inn. So, it was certainly a much smaller operation than it is today. It truly began as welcoming people to their home, and that’s exactly what we want guests to feel when we welcome them today. Kreis and Sandy were young, excited about this land, and passionate about great hospitality. Kreis wanted a place where people felt comfortable and taken care of, where they could gather at the table like family. Those humble beginnings created the ethos of Blackberry Farm, and that spirit is what has made Blackberry Farm so special to so many people over the last 50 years.

What was the original vision for Blackberry Farm?

I think the vision was simply to run an inn. Kreis wanted to host, welcome, and cook, and she and Sandy wanted to share the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains with visitors. When they first opened in 1976, they started with hosting corporate retreats. Then in 1990, they fully opened to the public. In the years since, we’ve added restaurants, built Bramble Hall, a beautiful venue, expanded the gardens, and hosted all kinds of events, including music, wellness, cycling, food and wine and many more. So, the vision has evolved over the years and continues to evolve five decades in. The Bealls have always been dreamers, and aren’t we all so lucky that they dreamed big.

What would you say is the heart and soul of the property?

The team, absolutely, is the heart and soul of Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain. Great hospitality comes from the people. You can have the most beautiful setting in the world (and I’m biased, but I think we do), but it takes the best people to make guests from all over the world feel welcome and important.

What makes the cellar so special?

For one, the tunnel. It never gets old watching someone descend the stairs and experience the view of the wine tunnel for the first time. But, of course, what’s most special is the bottles it holds. The wine collection has been so thoughtfully curated over the years, and the bottles represent the incredible stories and lives of some of the greatest winemakers and importers in the world. It started with my husband, Sam, and continues with Andy Chabot and his team, but the effort to forge genuine relationships with vintners, producers, sommeliers, and leaders across the industry is the reason we have the collection we do today.

How has the spa evolved?

The spa had its own humble beginnings. It’s amazing how much the wellness industry has changed over the years, and I’m thankful for a thoughtful and talented team who help us maintain the ethos of our spa programming while evolving our treatments to create the most enjoyable and effective experiences for our guests. We keep a holistic connection to the land around us while always researching and learning about the best natural products and innovative techniques.

What is some of the newest programming that you’ve added to the property?

One of the incredible things about experiencing life in the Great Smoky Mountains is that while going on a guided hike, a horseback ride, or a fly fishing adventure – just to name a few! – may not be “new” programming at the Farm, you will never have the same experience twice. There is always something new to discover! You never know what surprises the land will offer that day. Our Blackberry Year events also create really unique opportunities to experience Blackberry Farm in a way that will only happen at that event with those people. We are so lucky to welcome leaders in culinary, wine, wellness and beyond who partner with the Blackberry team to create truly one-of-a-kind experiences. 

What was the inspiration for Blackberry Mountain?

When we first started thinking about Blackberry Mountain, it really wasn’t about how much we could build, it was about how much we could protect. Half of Blackberry Mountain’s 5,200 acres are in conservation, ensuring the land gets to prosper undisturbed. So we kept things intentionally low density and took our time placing everything where it felt right, rather than forcing the land to fit a plan. The goal was always for it to feel like the Mountain is still the main character, and we’re just lucky enough to be part of it. 

During the winter, we did some exciting renovations to the Lodge. We enclosed the dining terrace to create a new dining space, redesigned the Whippoorwill Bar, and installed beautiful new lighting and artwork. We also redesigned the Classroom in the Hub to accommodate an even broader range of classes. We’re finishing renovations now to reimagine the lower floor of the Lodge as a new private dining experience, and we’re finalizing some updates to the spa, Nest. We’ve added new wellness programming as well. 

What do the next 10 years at Blackberry look like?

You never know. Of course, we have some ideas and goals, but one of the beautiful things about Blackberry and the team here is that a new big idea may spark tomorrow, and this team will make it happen.

WEST COAST

Tomales Bay, California

Oyster country doesn’t get dreamier than Tomales Bay. Located 80 minutes north of San Francisco in bountiful West Marin County, the bay serves as the eastern boundary of the Point Reyes Peninsula and is a short drive from the wineries of Napa and Sonoma counties. A constant upwelling of nutrients from the well-oxygenated waters flowing in from the chilly Pacific Ocean make this estuary a prolific hub for California’s aquaculture industry. Today, five farms cultivate diverse species on the bay ranging from tiny but umami packed Olympia to buttery Kumamoto. The 115-year-old Tomales Bay Oyster Company, the oldest bivalve farm in California, is known for its seasonal Golden Nuggets. With every tide, the oysters go through a unique tumbling system that produces a deep-cupped, plump oyster with a melony-finish. Hog Island Oyster Co. uses rack-and-back farming techniques to grow its flagship Hot Island sweetwaters, which taste just like the name suggests. Where to try them: Nick’s Cove, a 1930s fishing shack reimagined as a modern bayfront inn got a serious glow up in 2023. Celebrated chef Chris Cosentino consulted on the menu which includes the hit barbecued oysters sourced from Tomales Bay Oyster Company. Willapa Bay, Washington

Oysters cultivated in Willapa Bay off Washington’s Pacific Coast are prized for their salty-sweet balance and silky texture. Many are grown using a tide-tumbling technique, where the oysters grow in baskets or bags suspended above the bay floor. As the tide rushes in, the water agitates the bivalves and rotates the baskets, helping them form harder shells and deeper cups filled with firm meat. The process is similar to how sea glass is formed, hence the name of Taylor Shellfish Farms’ smooth-shelled, clean, crisp Beach Glass Pacific Oysters. Now run by the fifth generation of the Taylor family, the business is known for its Shigoku oysters. Meaning “ultimate” in Japanese, this 

Willapa Bay off Washington’s Pacific Coast is known as the state’s premier oyster region, producing the renowned Shigoku oysters. A varietal of Pacific oysters, Shigoku, means “ultimate” in Japanese, and is so named for its plump meat and strong, briny flavor profile and sweet finish. Their Fat Bastards are a more robust, big brother of the Shigoku. Where to try them: Taylor Shellfish Farms has three oyster bars in Seattle, but it’s worth the scenic, one hour and 40-minute drive north to picnic at the family’s farm and shellfish market on Samish Bay in the small town of Bow. Tables overlooking the oyster beds in the bay are first-come, first-serve and the menu is whatever is fresh that day. You can’t go wrong with a shuckers dozen and a bottle of Washington Chardonnay.

GULF COAST

Grand Isle, Louisiana

Grand Isle, a barrier island where Louisiana’s estuary meets the Gulf, was once booming with oyster production. Over the years, frequent hurricanes damaged the oyster reefs putting the industry at risk. Now, a collective of growers has banded together to adopt an innovative cultivation technique known as off-bottom farming, where the oysters are grown in floating cages rather than directly on the ocean floor. The late third-generation oysterman Jules Melancon of Caminada Bay Oyster Farm, is credited with having pioneered the method in Grand Ise. Marketed as Grand Isle Jewels, these boutique oysters from producers such as Bright Side Oysters and Little Moon Oyster Ranch, are sought out for their distinctively salty, creamy, and buttery flavor profile. Where to try them: An oyster crawl of the top tables in New Orleans showcases Grande Isle Jewels in all of their glory, from raw to grilled. Hit the marble-topped raw bar at seafood temple, Pêche, try them Cajun-style at Mosquito Supper Club, and order the oyster sampler at Seaworthy to compare flavor profiles.

EAST COAST

Damariscotta River, Maine

With nearly 3,500 miles of rugged coastline, Maine is the ideal place to cultivate and harvest oysters. The cold, nutrient rich Atlantic ocean gives Maine oysters a distinctly crisp and briny, yet buttery and sweet flavor. Midcoast, the Damariscotta River is considered the oyster capital of Maine. Around 80 percent of all Maine oysters are harvested from this 12-mile estuary, and you’ll find the state’s oldest operating oyster farms here. Where to try them: Take to the bay by boat for an oyster and wine tasting experience that passes many of the region’s top bivalve farms, sampling local varieties, including bright and briny Pemaquid to succulent Glidden Points oysters, and a sommelier is on hand for pairings. You can try the latter at the source. Glidden Pt. Oyster Farms in Edgecombe, where you can enjoy tastings and shucking lessons on its patio.

Chesapeake Bay, Maryland + Virginia

In the late 19th century, oyster harvesting in the Chesapeake was so profitable that oysters earned the moniker, “white gold.” Numbers dwindled over the years due to a combination of over-harvesting and habitat loss. Today, oyster farming has helped bring the mollusks back to the bay. Nowhere will you find such variety. Flavors span the salt spectrum, from subtly sweet to ultra briny. Connected to both the freshwaters of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, the Rappahannock River is an oyster growing hotspot. Its namesake oysters are delicate and sweet, with less salinity than the average East Coast oysters. Where to try them: Cousins and fourth-generation oystermen Ryan and Travis Croxton took over their grandfather’s Virginia oyster leases in 2001, when the industry was on the brink of collapse, and turned them into  Rappahannock Oyster Co., one of the first commercially viable aquaculture operations in the Chesapeake. Slurp their deep cupped, buttery bivalves at the farm tasting room in Topping, Virginia, or at their oyster bars in Richmond, Charleston, Los Angeles, and Dulles airport.

Polebridge Mercantile, Polebridge, Montana

The tiny off-grid community of Polebridge has no cell service or electricity from the grid, but it does have its namesake mercantile, which serves the tastiest huckleberry bear claws in the West. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Polebridge Mercantile was built in 1914, four years after Glacier National Park was christened. Located one mile from the park’s northwest entrance, it’s the last stop for essentials like propane and ice, and indulgences like Montana-made souvenirs, deli sandwiches, ice cream, and new and used books. Since the bakery was added in 1994, tourists detour just for the homemade cinnamon rolls, fruit fritters, and signature bearclaws.

Aladdin General, Aladdin, Wyoming

Wyoming’s oldest continuously operating general store has served as a post office, train depot, gas station, barbershop, freight station and sundries and dry goods store since opening in 1896. It remains the heart of this 15-resident community, and a tourist stop for travelers enroute to Devils Tower National Monument, located 38 miles to the east. While the shelves now stock craft beer and vintage cowboy boots, little else has changed. Everything from the peeling wallpaper and woodwork to the roll-top storage bins behind the counter are all original.

F.H. Gillingham & Sons, Woodstock, Vermont

Of Vermont’s approximately 70 remaining general stores, F.H. Gillingham & Sons in Woodstock owns bragging rights as being the oldest family-owned operation. Today, Frank and Jireh Billings carry on the business their great-grandfather started 140 years ago. A visit is like stepping back in time. Inside, you’ll find antiques like the old manual power Otis freight elevator and 1890s cash register, aisles of retro toys and penny candy (now priced a bit higher), plus utilitarian supplies like Carhartt work pants and gardening tools. Maple items are a specialty, from Grade A syrups to the signature shortbread.

Rabbit Hash General Store, Rabbit Hash, Kentucky

Nestled on the banks of the Ohio River, this white-washed general store appears untouched by time, with its sign still touting tobacco, sundries, potions, notions. Surviving floods and fires since opening circa 1831, its large front porch has served as the unincorporated town’s social hub and remains so today. Road trippers enroute to nearby Big Bone Lick State Historic Site drop in to purchase six-packs of the general store’s namesake lager, snacks, and Sunday concerts. It’s such an institution its facade has been recreated as a float for the local 4th of July parade. 

Two Grey Hills Trading Post, Newcomb, New Mexico

A must-stop when visiting the Four Corners, Two Grey Hills in northeast New Mexico is one of the last remaining historic trading posts on the Navajo Indian Reservation. The humble stone-and-adobe store dates to 1897 and is renowned for its one-of-a-kind, earth-toned rugs and tapestries made from hand-spun yarn from the fleet of local sheep. Members of the local Dine community still stop in weekly to sell their arts and crafts and purchase staples like fresh mutton and weaving tools.

Davoll’s General Store, South Dartmouth, Massachusetts

Davoll’s lays claim to being the oldest general store in America, operating since 1793. Some 14 different local families have run this landmark. Its recent stewards, brothers Ben and Will Shattuck, kept nostalgic touches, like the penny candy corner, but added a bookstore, pub, and a cafe that serves made-from-scratch clam chowder and grilled cheese. Trivia nights, author readings, plus a knitting club and book club have revived it as a gathering spot for the community.

How is Paintrock Canyon different from your previous guest ranches in Colorado?

Scale-wise, it’s similar, but it has a lot more layers. There are more opportunities to experience day-to-day ranch work, like moving cattle, irrigating, fencing, and even observing baby calves being born. Paintrock Creek flows through the middle of the ranch, so guests have opportunities to swim and fish. We have access to one of the best fisheries in northern Wyoming and the rainbow and brown trout fishing is incredible. There is also great birding here. At the previous properties, we’d have to drive guests to trailheads for hiking, but we have so much that’s close here. And the vistas are so diverse. You have everything from huge mountains and beautiful rock formations to open prairie and the creek. The scenery is really multi-dimensional.

What’s a typical ranch stay like?

The closest town is the speck of Hyattville, which is one-and-a-half hours from Cody and three hours from Billings, Montana. Guests arrive on a Sunday and depart on Friday for a five-night stay. We really cater to what guests are looking to experience. Some people want to ride a horse all day or help move the cattle. Some people want to hike. Others just want to sit and read at camp. We have 14 safari-style tents, all comfortably furnished and within a short walk to bathrooms and hot showers. I tell friends, this is not camping. You’re a 16th of an inch from nature all night long without being adversely affected by it. All meals are cooked outdoors over fire and served at communal tables. Our chef uses Ranchlands beef for many of the dishes. We also host wellness retreats, writing retreats led by notable authors like Molly Wizenberg, and workshops and clinics on everything from outdoor skills to stockmanship.

How are ranching and conservation intertwined?

Conservation is a product we produce, just like beef. We see ourselves as stewards of the land. It’s not an obligation, it’s an honor. From a business standpoint, the better we care for the land the more productive it will be. We graze our cattle in a way that restores the land, mimicking historic mobile herds. But it’s also a moral responsibility. When you live on the land you develop a relationship with it and the animals who live on it. You see a coyote every morning or the eagles nesting and want to protect them. People come here and it opens their eyes to how a working landscape can work in harmony with nature.

Summer in the National Parks

Despite the travel challenges immediately following Covid in 2020, in the past few years national parks saw record visitor numbers. The Grand Canyon saw 4.7 million visitors, second only to Great Smoky Mountains National Park which saw 13.3 million visitors. Since it’s looking like that trend will continue in 2026, there are a few parks in particular that are essential to plan ahead for this year.

Summer is the most popular time to visit most National parks, so it’s key to book in advance. July and August in particular bring the best weather and it’s a fantastic time to take in one of the most spectacular landscapes in North America. The Grand Canyon, Zion, Yellowstone, The Great Smoky Mountains and Yosemite are all in the top five most popular American national parks to visit so if you’re hoping to visit these during peak season, planning ahead is crucial.

In an effort to manage the mass amount of visitors and preserve the pristine wilderness in these areas, many parks have implemented new reservation and timed-entry systems. Mountain Rainier, Glacier, Arches, Rocky Mountain, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Arches, and Acadia National Parks are some of the more popular spots that require reservations during peak season, with many more starting pilot programs this year.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving and because so many of us hold these landscapes close, we wanted to highlight a few of those partners working behind the scenes and the projects and initiatives that are shaping the future of America’s National Parks.

The North Rim’s Post-Fire Recovery | Grand Canyon Conservancy

Grand Canyon National Park | Arizona, Nevada, Utah

Earlier this year, the Dragon Bravo Fire devastated the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park burning over 145,000 acres. The blaze destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and dozens of associated cabins and structures in the developed North Rim zone. In response, the Grand Canyon Conservancy (the nonprofit partner of Grand Canyon National Park) launched the Disaster Recovery Fund to help displaced residents, fund post-fire mitigation and monitoring initiatives, and support the long-term restoration and recovery of the area.

Restoring Buffalo to Tribal Lands | InterTribal Buffalo Council

Yellowstone National Park | Wyoming

Once numbering up to 60 million across North America, buffalo today exist in only the tens of thousands – a staggering drop that shows just how close the species came to disappearing entirely. The InterTribal Buffalo Council (ITBC) is a coalition of more than 80 federally recognized Tribes working to restore bison to Tribal lands across the United States. They partner with national parks—most notably Yellowstone—to transfer disease-free bison from federal herds to Tribal nations, where the animals can support cultural revitalization, food sovereignty, and ecosystem restoration. ITBC provides technical support, funding, and training to help Tribes manage sustainable herds. Their work is helping return bison to landscapes and communities where they’ve been absent for more than a century.

Saving California’s Giants | Sequoia Parks Conservancy

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks | California

In the face of several challenges from devastating wildfires to extreme rainfall, an estimated 10-14% of the Sierra Nevada’s sequoias were killed from 2020-2021. The Sequoia Parks Conservancy is the primary nonprofit partner of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, supporting the programs and people who keep these ancient trees thriving, and it’s a cause close to home with our founder Sam Highley serving on the board. As giant sequoias face unprecedented threats from severe wildfire, drought, and a rapidly shifting climate, the Conservancy has taken on an essential role in their long-term protection. Through their support of projects like restoring fire-scarred groves, planting new seedlings, expanding research, and investing in on-the-ground conservation teams, they’re helping ensure California’s giants endure for the next generation.

As the park’s namesake glaciers continue to shrink at an alarming pace, the Conservancy funds critical projects that track melt rates, monitor snowpack, and advance climate science. By backing researchers, educators, and on-the-ground field teams, they help ensure that the story of Glacier’s disappearing ice is understood, documented, and used to shape a more resilient future.

Understanding Yellowstone’s Wolves | Yellowstone Forever

The Wolf Project in Yellowstone is one of the longest-running wildlife studies in the world, and Yellowstone Forever plays a key role in keeping it moving forward. Their support helps biologists track wolf packs, monitor territories, and gather decades of data that reveal how wolves shape the park’s entire ecosystem. They also fund new tools like acoustic and video monitoring systems that offer an even clearer picture of how wolves communicate and behave. Altogether, this work deepens scientific understanding while helping visitors appreciate the importance of wolves in Yellowstone’s natural balance.

Protecting Florida’s Fragile Reefs | National Park Foundation

Biscayne National Park | Florida

At Biscayne National Park in South Florida, divers and scientists supported by the National Park Foundation are racing to save the park’s coral reefs—threatened by warming waters, disease, and marine debris. Their work includes collecting coral gametes, growing young corals in tanks, cleaning up thousands of pounds of debris, and treating disease-infected colonies in the field. The effort not only protects fragile reef biodiversity but also strengthens the marine ecosystem’s role in coastal resilience and human well-being. Through programs like Women Veterans in Parks, volunteers and veterans also have the chance to join restoration dives and hands-on conservation work, deepening community involvement in the health of Biscayne’s waters.

April: New Orleans and Acadiana

Mardi Gras in February is the party to end all parties but for a more sedate time (it’s all relative in Louisiana), April is an ideal month to visit New Orleans, as well as nearby Acadiana. The latter, focused around the town of Lafayette, is a fascinating region that hosts the Festival International de Louisiane, a celebration of the unique food, music, and culture in this Francophone area.

May: Southern Utah

Zion Canyon, Utah

Nowhere boasts a higher concentration of national parks than Southern Utah, with five very different geological wonderlands all in close proximity, making the region the perfect road trip territory. Spring brings warm days and cool nights, perfect for getting out and enjoying the endless options for adventure travel, from exploring hidden slot canyons and petroglyph-lined caves, to world class mountain biking and whitewater rafting.

June: California’s Sierra Nevada

For a different landscape entirely, California’s Yosemite is magical in early June with the park’s iconic waterfalls still in full flow, pleasant days are the norm on the valley floor and dogwood, lupine, Mariposa lily, penstemon and others are in full bloom. The park’s higher elevation areas around Tuolumne Meadows and Glacier Point will now be accessible after a long winter under a blanket of snow. Continue north, through the Sierra foothills towards Sacramento, stopping in former gold rush towns and sampling the region’s up-and-coming wineries, or turn south to Sequoia National Park and the largest trees on the planet.

East Burke, Vermont

October might just be one of our favorite months to plan a trip in the U.S., with fewer crowds in many national parks, cooler temperatures returning to the south, and aspen and cottonwoods turning the Rockies a dazzling hue of yellows, reds and oranges. Fall in New England needs no introduction and we might also include a late season trip to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket once the summer crowds have departed.

Big Bend National Park

Far West Texas might be a tricky place to get to but its remoteness only adds to its allure. Tell us about your story and how you landed at Ted Turner Reserves.

I’m Jade McBride — the President of Ted Turner Reserves. I often say I’m the luckiest hospitality worker in the industry. With some hard work and a bit of luck, I’ve found myself in the right place at the right time, again and again. From a farm in Idaho to the U.S. Navy as a search and rescue swimmer, hard work has laid my foundation. But I never imagined that being part of the opening team at the storybook property Amangiri would one day lead me to steward over a million acres of wild, working land.

I lead with the belief that conservation and hospitality are not separate; they’re a single invitation to awaken the human spirit through connection, with the land, with ourselves, and with the people we love. At Ted Turner Reserves, guests don’t just stay; they are invited into a shared story of restoration, wonder, and deep purpose.

Tell us about Ted Turner and his conservation ethos – what motivated the creation of Ted Turner Reserves?

Ted’s life was shaped by bold action, in media, the environment, and land stewardship. His ethos: if we don’t step up and do the right thing, who will? His properties aren’t just assets, they’re living classrooms. He believes in restoring and protecting ecosystems, preserving endangered species, and empowering people through nature. Ted Turner Reserves was born from that vision. Ted and I both know that when we spend time in these healthy, balanced landscapes, we leave better people. More grounded, more inspired, more human.

Ranching + Conservation—what makes this marriage work?

It’s about balance, respect, and interdependence.

We believe we are the world’s foremost model for advancing wild and working landscapes, and those words are carefully chosen. We believe we can protect all things wild, from microorganisms in the soil to endangered wolves, while recognizing that humans are part of the ecosystem too. That means we can protect the wild and work the land in a symbiotic way that allows both people and nature to heal and thrive together.

What are some conservation achievements the Reserves have undertaken that you’re most proud of?

We’ve reintroduced bison, supported the return of Mexican Grey wolves, restored native trout and water systems, and created guest experiences that invite people to engage with these efforts directly. Choosing a proudest moment is like choosing a favorite child. But what stands out most is the time and scale. Very few individuals on Earth have invested as much, for as long, as Ted Turner. Some of these efforts have taken 30 years and millions of dollars, and they’re still ongoing today. That’s something rare and deeply meaningful.

Tell us about the Castle Rock Bison and what makes them so unique?

These bison are wild hearted descendants of iconic herds. They roam freely across high desert and riparian corridors. What makes them unique is in their DNA, the Castle Rock herd is one of the most genetically pure American Bison populations left on Earth. Their presence heals the land, restoring prairie balance and ecosystem health.

How should conservation and travel be intertwined?

There really is no other option. Travel must evolve from sightseeing to soul finding. Conservation and connection breathe life into every moment. When guests hike a trail, hear from a biologist, or learn from Indigenous voices, they begin to see differently. And when it’s time to go home from a place like Vermejo, they don’t really leave, the place stays with them. It becomes part of who they are. They return inspired, transformed, and more deeply connected to the Earth, themselves, and the people they love.

What singular conservation activities do travelers experience across your reserves?

Whether you’re at Vermejo, Ladder, Armendaris, or Sierra Grande, the land teaches you, not through a lecture or a brochure, but through discovery. Maybe it’s watching bats emerge from a cave at dusk, or cresting a hill just as a bison herd comes into view. It might be the wonder in your child’s face as they hold a native Rio Grande Cutthroat trout for the first time. Every experience is intentionally crafted to be fun, engaging, and full of discovery.

Do you envision expansion into other Turner properties?

Ted always saw our landscapes as places where the land and people could heal each other. While we’re currently rooted in New Mexico, our story is one of growth. On every Turner vehicle, you’ll find a bumper sticker that reads “Save Everything.” That spirit isn’t limited to one location and neither is our vision. Ted never did things small. His thinking has always been generational, visionary, global. When the land calls and the mission aligns we’ll be ready to listen. And to lead.

Anything else you’d like travelers to know?
