Hidden in a remote, secluded valley surrounded by national forest and mountains, this former mining camp turned luxury getaway, is our idea of heaven.

The Atmosphere

After following the West Fork of the Dolores River through an idyllic valley lined with aspen and pine, you’ll find Dunton Hot Springs nestled at the head of the valley. Once a small mining settlement, then a hippie hideaway, it has since been painstakingly restored by Christoph Henkel and his wife Katrin. While no luxury has been spared, the atmosphere is relaxed and homely, with few air and graces.

The series of original log cabins, many of which were hand built by the miners themselves, are scattered in a circle around the central Saloon and Dance Hall. The low-key, rustic exteriors belie the attention to detail that has been applied to the interiors, with original Western art works and unique furnishings handpicked by owner and designer, Katrin Bellinger.

See & Do

From hiking and biking through alpine basins and wildflower-filled meadows, to truly fantastic fly fishing on a nine mile private stretch of the West Fork, there is no end of things to keep you busy at Dunton Hot Springs.

For a less energetic time, you’re never far from a restorative soak in one of the resort’s hot springs. Whether you’re one of the lucky ones with your own private pool or you take a trip to the atmospheric bathhouse, the traces of Lithium in the water only add the sense of total relaxation.

Venturing further afield, it is an easy day trip to the picture perfect mountain town of Telluride to the north and the fascinating pre-colonial cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde National Park sit to the south.

Your Room

Each authentically restored log cabin is unique with its own character but all have incredible views and have been stylishly furnished. For families, we love the Dunton Store with its own private soaking pool, and for a couples looking for some seclusion, the cozy Dolores cabin sits by the river with a large deck overlooking the water.

For the ultimate peace and solitude, Dunton River Camp sits four miles downstream and offers a small number of guests a nature-immersed luxury glamping experience.

Eat & Drink

Enjoyed at the communal dining room and prepared in the open kitchen, meal times at Dunton Hot Springs are something to savor. Expect fresh, local ingredients, many from the their own farm and vineyard.
