Planning Luxury Sabbaticals in the U.S.

Rooted in centuries-old traditions among clergy and academics, sabbaticals were designed as both reward and renewal—a deliberate interruption in the constant cadence of daily work. Today, this type of extended time off feels more necessary than ever, offering a rejuvenating pause from the intensity and ‘always-on’ nature of modern work.

We believe there’s no better backdrop for extended meaningful sabbaticals than the open road of the United States. With a striking diversity of landscapes, cultures and experiences, the United States offers endless possibilities within a single cohesive journey. The components of these odysseys look very different for each client: a lazy wine country road trip along the West Coast, an adventurous pack trip through the backcountry of Montana, a stay on a working dude ranch in the American West, or a secluded, rejuvenating retreat in one of the many remote luxury getaways dotted across the country.

Designing and planning the perfect luxury sabbatical, one that is personal to you, is in our DNA–whatever the shape, length, and motivation your sabbatical takes, we’re here to help. Read on to learn more about our thoughtful approach to crafting these trips and how to get started with planning.

Our Sabbatical Planning Approach

Thoughtful sabbatical design from genuine specialists

As these trips may quite literally be ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ and the extended length can leave one paralyzed for choice, they should be designed with intention and care. Our sabbaticals aren’t meant to be picked off a menu, but thoughfully designed to reflect each traveler’s personal motivations and interests. Some want quiet reflection, others crave physical challenges, and many simply want to enjoy themselves–the itinerary should reflect that. Whether the trip spans multiple states or goes deep in a single region, if you’ll be bringing family along or going solo, opting for seclusion over crowds, seeking adventurous activities or a mindful wellness respite; every detail is carefully considered when building an itinerary that is personal, singular and unique.

Variety is the spice of life (and sabbaticals)

Planning a longer trip leaves room for a wider range of experiences and places—things that rarely fit into a standard two-week itinerary. With our network of guides, storytellers, naturalists, and on-the-ground experts, combined with deep knowledge of the United States, a sabbatical could include anything from exploring the High Road to Taos in New Mexico, living with the family at a private ranch in far West Texas, getting under the skin of one of America’s great cities or island hopping through the San Juan Islands in Washington. Whatever your experience, we’ll make sure it is varied and memorable.

Slowing down on sabbatical

Slow travel is often the goal, but time rarely allows for truly getting to know a place. A sabbatical is different. It’s not about rushing from one stop to the next; it’s about pacing—some stretches move quickly, others are meant to be slower. The pressure to fit everything in during shorter trips often robs travelers of the chance to intentionally slow down and really get to know a place and its people. With a sabbatical mindset, especially on the road, there’s room to spend more quality time in more places, perhaps learning a new skill, taking a course or volunteering.

Making yourself at home on the road

Spending many weeks or months away from home in traditional hotel rooms, regardless of how indulgent, can be tough. Our diverse portfolio of partner properties means you’ll have stays along the way where you can truly spread out and make yourself at home. Whether a fully staffed private home, perhaps with friends and family joining you, or a spacious hotel residence, allowing you to enjoy a ‘home’ cooked meal, we’ll make sure that you have the space and amenities to unwind, spread out and slow down.
